Thanks! It is cool to work on it with him, and he learns from my mistakes just as much as the stuff I intentionally show him

Grr....events have conspired to keep us from working on the bus,: e.g. I hate the first few days of Ocotober, Work, have to fight the falling leaves (with daylight wastings time upon us, I have to spend alot of my light hours doing that, otherwise ill have 18 inches of leaves), waiting on parts (flywheel), and Caleb has acquired a ladyfriend.

I did test out reflectors for babysnakes last week:

and today, Leb enjoyed stripping some old seats so he can have headrests:

hopefully more work will get done soon.

BTW, flywheel..JUNK! got a stock resurfaced one from DPR machine (backordered so it took a few weeks), and followed Robbies advice for a new crank pulley.

cuz I tried this:

then ate my gorilla biscuits and drank a quart of balls and tried this:

and bent the damn pulley and it still wouldnt come off.

I suspect it was already knackered, but we ended up renting a tool from NAPA and it was off in less than a minute (after fiddling with it to make it fit)--i cant find the pics of that part..

If you haven't done so already, you should replace those output shaft seals. I just did mine, it's a bit of a job, but one that you won;t have to repeat if done correctly.

Thanks!

Yep, its on the list. I have the parts for it, its just a matter of getting a "roundtoit". I noticed there was ALOT of nasty buildup, some of it was from the leaking main oil seal, but some of it was definitely coming from the axles.

I'm a mailman by trade, so right now its crazy busy at work but hopefully after new years we can get back into the groove of slowly but surely plodding away at it.

Cool, unfortunately, I don;t have any pics, but here is a quick list of things that I learned that will make your job easier..

Get a good pair of lockring pliers, not the dinky pin type, these are made for the heavy duty lockrings.

http://www.sears.com/craftsman-external-lock-ring-pliers/p-00949273000P?adCell=REC_1_0

Get a good seal puller, the one at Harbor Freight will break, I got one from Autozone, "OEM" brand. And put a 7/16 deepwell 1/4" drive socket between the face of the landing and the tool, use it as a fulcrum and you won't mar up the face either.

Use a 2" galvanized cap to drive the new seal in, fits perfect.

When reinstalling the retaining rings, make sure you don't forget the spring washer, and then Use a 12pt socket that just fits over the stub (I used the back of an aluminum flashlight with the cap removed), smack the back of the socket with a hammer so that ring snaps in place, work around with a large flat screwdriver to make sure it is seated.

finally, push the last cap on with the back of a socket that just fits.

I wish I would have taken pictures and done a writeup, good luck.

Probably some kind of pipe cap. When driving in seals, as long as the driving force is acting on the outer perimeter of the seal, 'yer good. I use a 50mm socket for the output shaft/differential side seals. Horrible Freight actually sells an OK seal/bearing driver kit, but it's useless here since the axle shaft sticks out past the seal.

Yes, galvanized pipe cap you can find it in the plumbing section at any hardware store for about 4$

Hey Charles, just found this thread Smile. Hope all is well with you and the family (and the extended GSAC family). I'm going to be heading down to NH in the next few months to drag Ducky and the Westy up north and get back to wrenching and welding myself. I *might* have some stuff for Weld in the shed, I'll take a look when I'm there and see what early bay stuff I've got kicking around that I know I'm not going to need. I know for sure I have a spare battery tray panel and a very nice gas tank that Dave gave me for Ducky but Ducky is FI and the tank is single outlet so should fit your (Caleb's) bus if you need one. Might have a few other things kicking around. Let me know a wishlist and I'll see what I can find Smile

Scott! i was just reading the thread on you getting ducky back! I cant believe its been 5 years.

I was going to offer if you need to store them somewhere until you can get them home you could bring them over here if you need to (sorry, only thing that fits in the garaj is weld tho)

Pretty much whatever you got kicking around you dont want we'd take. Im pretty sure the gas tank is going to be needed, as theres some rusty residue in the filter right now. havent go that far yet, been a long winter!

the bus is weird, some stuff still has factory paint on the underside and looks almost new, other stuff is scary.

Caleb is on school break week after next, so we are planning on spending the week doin it to it.

ALSO---BTW, the GSAc and the bug club is having a dustoff on may 1st at fort foster if you are around then.

So Caleb is home from College, and I took this week off to work on his bus, and now hes sick! Maybe ill get him out sometimes this week, but i am tryign to put the front end back together (partially so i can get HIS bus out of the garage and MY bus in) .

The front shocks were shot, so i got Konis to replace it with. Now, looking at the fiche, the original bolts were 95mm, but all ive been able to find locally (or within reasonable time frame) are either 100mm, or 90 mm (but wrong pitch)

Can i use the 100mm , with or without extra washers or something?)

or just do it "for now" and swap out the 95s later (all i can find online are BMW ones)

i clipped this from the Koni group buy thread:

"The lower mount hole size changed from 68/69 to 70 and up.

68/69 lower mount is 10mm. The nut part number N 11 010 4 to chassis number 219 300000

70 and up is 12mm. The nut part N 11 020 2 from 210 2000001 is 12 x 1.5

The top of the shock appears to be narrower on the 68/69 then the 70 and up.

68/69 upper bolt is part number 211 413 401A and is 12 x 1.5 x 95mm

70 up upper bolt was part number N 10 192 1 and was 12 x 1.5 x 100mm
This has been replaced by N 10 706 01 and is 12 x 1.5 102mm..... "

Hey hey, good to hear from you again!

Are you asking about the upper bolt? Go ahead and use the 100mm bolt, just make sure you use a good anti seize on the exposed end to delay the inevitable corrosion.

The lower mounts are different on the 68-69 shocks, so I think you're asking two different questions, correct?

Robbie

Hey man!

Yes, the upper bolt! just the 100mm vs 95mm bolt question about the top mount..thanks!

I know ive got the right shock and the right 10mm nut for the bottom. (Ok, well i think so but well see how the rest of the week goes)

I remember when you came out this summer you said something about the steering dampener? but i cant remember what it was? like use one out of a (insert different vehicle but not a 69 bus)

As long as you use a good quality bolt (10.9 grade for max quality) so it can take the abuse of the shock, the 100mm will be long enough and should do the job fine. (though I would make sure to have it be the same nut size, for ease purposes)

Is there grommet coming out of the front lower panel for the main wiring harness? (like under the nose?) I pulled it out and forgot to take pictures of that part (or cant find them) and hopefully im goign to pull it back in next week.

I know theres a grommet where it comes though the rear firewall, but i cant tell if i should have one up front (it looks like itd be a tight fit).

The brake and horn harnesses dont have grommets either..should they?

On my 73 it looks like the was "something" in there, but im not sure if it was a grommet or some "monkey dung" material.

(an answer on a 73 would be awesome too)

here are the holes im talking about

this is where the main wiring harness ends up going, is there a grommet for it?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

here is where the brake switch and i think the horn harnesses come out, no grommets on it...

should there have been?

if so, any idea on part numbers or a suitable replacement?

Great thread. Awesome back story. I'm really enjoying this thread.

I can relate- somewhat. I have a daughter, younger than your son, that loves VW's. She will help work on the bus- which to me is so cool.

Continued success on restoring the bus.
