I bought a 1300 engine (for parts) at a VW swap. As I was pulling parts off I discovered what looks like a patched hole between the holes for #1 and #2 push rods. Any ideas why?

I would guess someone drilled/tapped for an oil temp sensor, and a later owner plugged it up.
