I purchased a propex HS2000 heater a while back and have it mounted under the rear bench seat in my vanagon. Is it really necessary to install an intake vent on the kick panel? It seems to work fine without. Just wondering if there is anyone out there who has tried it both ways and found there to be a practical (not theoretical) advantage to having a specific intake vent.

Thanks!

I don't have one, but it needs fresh air from outside or it will use up all the O2 inside your sealed up van and you will die..

Ummm, nope....the Propex has a separate external air intake and exhaust for the burner.

I also have mine mounted under the bench seat. That area has plenty of cabin air that can get there that an independent vent for the cabin intake air is not needed.

On a stock Westy rear seat configuration, there is plenty of flow around the seat so the extra box vent is not necessary. The burner intake air of course is separate and drawn in from below.

In order to fit my propex in the shore-power fuse location, I hacksawed off the intake nozzle and drilled a bunch of perforation holes in the side plate that covers the electronics. A few grates in the cupboard keep the airflow from the fridge vents. I may have voided my warranty, but it works great and uses hardly any space:

Kinda like keeping your lug nuts tight--do that or you will die--

Yep, warranty void with that amount of cutting. Did you happen to notice the return air connector is spot welded, and a small amount of grinding would have popped it loose vs sawing? It could have been left in place and just the cover plate perforations done, which might have kept the warranty intact. Where is the return air entering the cabinet?

Yeah, my propex install was a bit of a disaster because I'm a horrible mechanic. I wouldn't expect the warranty to be valid.

That being said, it's pretty awesome in the location I have it, and it works amazingly well.

I put a 4" hole saw hole between the cubby cabinet and the fridge cabinet (my fridge was deleted) covered by a grate. The air intake flows in the old fridge vent on the floor through the side of the cubby and into the propex.

Looking forward to future winter camping now that I don't have to worry about being cold.
