|
In the classified ads:

I just can't see with the current market that this car could be listed at 100K. So I sent a PM to the owner to see if it was a typo, no response.
My next thought was maybe it is a famous movie car from the 1979 Pink Panther film as listed. Maybe that justifies the hefty list price. I couldn't find a 1979 film. It looks like the closest date would be the 1978 movie Revenge of the Pink Panther, but its set in Hong Kong. Nevertheless, I skimmed through the movie without a Thing sighting.

Is this a 100K or 10K car? |

There are some very expensive VW's in Cali... I see them on here all the time...
I did the same as you, on a sorta decent project roadster beetle(sedan with the lid chopped off)... Guy had it listed as a project at $29k(?)... I respectfully mentioned the suspected typo from $2900., and got a direct "don't be hateful" response email.. He was dead serious...
Anyway, I could see $10k on this Thing, as an Acupolco, but the movie heritage means crap to me.... Kinda like "magazine cars".... Not worth a premium to me.... _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....

Why wouldn't someone finish getting the wiring hooked up and a muffler installed before trying to sell a rig? Assuming you can't easily get the engine to run and take it out for a test drive, then maybe they will get $5000 if they are lucky. Maybe do some more subtractions for the lack of a windshield and whatever else is probably missing from the 316K miles of abuse this rig may well have seen. |

The sale price might be in Mexican pesos, since 100K equals $6,370US dollars |

The ad is from California and seeing that I'm in California, you could very well be correct! |

I just got a response from the seller. It's not a typo.
I tried to talk him off the ledge. I sent him this comparable listing, without the movie car lineage: http://www.stellarautoplex.com/web/1923/vehicle/1495278
I called on the comp a while back and it was listed for under 25K.
Please note, I would love to see someone buy it at 100k. Bus prices are crazy right now (I'm looking) and if Thing prices start to match, I could really pad my retirement fund. |

Was your response pretty brash? I got called an "A$$ hole" for my efforts of trying to help him with his typo....
|
Brash, but without any "A" or "F" bombs. English did seem to be an issue. He is stuck, in his words: "price is a 100k".
I would love for him to justify the price here and show us some actual pictures of the car in a Pink Panther movie. |

Maybe we should start a poll as to what this particular Thing will sell for. I will stick with my value of $5000 though I think one could do better for that amount than buying this particular project car.
Note that the seller has changed the listing so that it doesn't mention the missing or incomplete wiring harness or the missing muffler. No longer any mention of the ridiculously low mileage claim either. I suspect it has a pile of other problems he isn't telling us about as well. Caveat emptor. |

Looks like the ad has been deleted. Maybe some one jumped on this deal. |

Damm you GI Joe! I really, really wanted to relive the Pink Panther movie that I have never seen (and may not even exist) and brag to all of my friends about the incredible find. I guess i will have to live vicariously through you Joe and your "100K" Thing.
