This is Henry, my '63. He's a stale air without the hood crest, which probably puts him as a late October/early November build. If anyone has a more precise range-of-date, feel free to let me know here.
I got him in 2016 after a long search. I wanted pre-67 Beetle, all stock, running and driving, and no major (structural) rust. I found this car a few blocks from my school in Brooklyn.
He was just about completely original - a real survivor. Didn't run great, but ran well enough to drive home about 20 miles.
Over the years I've treated him as I would any car. Keep it running, clean, and serviced. No restoration, but period-correct improvements as I would any car. I've done all kinds of relatively minor work on him to keep him going.
This past year the heads had to come off, and a bunch of other stuff had to be done that I'd never get to in any sort of timely manner, so he went to an excellent local VW shop. Now he's pretty much perfect, mechanically, and not bad in the looks department, either, although far from perfect. And that's perfectly good with me. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? My 63 that I picked up after the PO lost interest. He put on a narrowed beam, drop spindles and atomwerks plates on the rear. He stripped it out and stopped about 5 years ago. Mine now. Have the engine back together and running (on the floor of my garage). Got the old wiring out and new harness in.

You can use the VIN # to look up the month/year in the VIN charts here on the site:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/bugchassisdating.php
Reminder: The numbers for each month are the LAST number for that month
If it's confusing, PM me the VIN # if you don't want to post it publicly here. |
Thank you for the link to the chart, Everett. I now know that my car was built in October 1962, which makes sense, given the stale air and no hood crest. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Maybe someone here can help with some information.
I will be helping someone sell a 62 bug shortly. Based upon the VIN it was built in December 1961.
It's my understanding that in 62 VW changed the front turn signals (move to top of fender) and taillights (no longer Hella snowflakes) as well as added springs to the front hood hinges.
However this peticular bug has the old 61 lights and hood prop.
Unfortunately the plate behind the spare tire has been painted over so I can't see if the body MAY have been swapped OR did the early 62s carry over some 61 leftovers? The car DOES have a fuel gauge (also a start in 62?).
Any input would be appreciated. _________________ No Dents
