So I started this post in the Official 1960-1961 registry and restoration guide thread but wanted to just share it in the normal forms as i resto this car.
Bought this 1960 Euro last year and I have been doing research/collecting parts on the car until now. My research led me to where it was originally purchased at capitol Volkswagen sales in Boise Idaho. The car made its way to Utah and the front glass still had the 1972 Utah safety sticker on it. At some point the next year the car was moved to Arizona and I purchased it with the original 1973 license plate still on it. I purchased this car in August of 2014 in Phoenix Arizona from a Volkswagen enthusiast that had one too many projects.
The care was originally L440 Flint Gray with an interior that was gray cloth head liner and blue/gray seats and door panels. The car had the following features; window washer system; VDO electronic gas gauge; under the dash basket; roof rack; and aluminum kick panels. I will be trying to bring this car back to life with some original looks and some updates to the running gear and wheels.
Original samba pictures from when the previous owner was selling it.
Moving day; Picked up the car
Body off.
Pan restoration; first half almost done!
Both sides in and done!
I will post more as I continue to restore the car. Enjoy!
Built a body stand to get around the car and start the metal work. I think it looks pretty good for 2 hours of work.
Finished!
I will post more as the metal work is being done. |

Here are some pics of what I have done over the last couple weeks. I am prepping the pan for paint garage style.

Nice work so far. I like that stand you made. I think its cool to engineer your own stuff instead of overpaying for someone else's!
Car looks a lot like my good ol' 59 euro. |

Nice find. My entire family lives in the White Mountains in AZ. I hauled my grandparents car back from there after my grandmother passed. The reason I mention it is because the license plate on your car starts with SDD. I remember distinctly that the license number on the old Ford I hauled back was SCY 593. Wish I still had the plate and yes, still have the Ford and have owned it for 25 years now.
Keep up the good work. It is a nice bonus to have a car from out west with little to no rust. _________________ 1965 Herbie Replica. 1776cc dual Kads.

Grandpa Pete they were an option for that year but from an article I read it was part of the deluxe package that came on the European Beetles designated for the US. Of course I looked for the article again and can’t find it. I will search around and see if I can find it again. Here is what the kick panels look like.

Yes the body stand turned out nice. Makes it easy to get around the car and work on it. It cost less than $100 to make too! Thanks everyone for the props on the car. I will keep chipping away at it and hopefully turn out a nice daily driver. |
