How many people here are tall and own awnings? I've been thinking about getting a Fiamma. I'm 6'4" and I am wondering if I am always going to be bumping my head into it. |

I like my Shady Boy awning as it is "vaulted" from the perimeter up to the center. I also like it because: it's contained in a 3' case, weighs 15-20 lbs, and requires no drilling to mount (if you spend more for the drill-less brackets). _________________ 1990 Multivan - "Ohana"

most awnings (like the Fiamma) you can angle upwards.
so that the low point is still above the door frame by a couple inches..
of course you'd tip it down for rain to shed but..
I don't put the shady boy in the same class as the fiamma.
price, quality or effect. _________________

I too am 6'4" and I have the Dometic awning that came with the bus when I bought it years ago.
It will just clear the top of my head when extended horizontally. A couple years ago I bought the Fiamma style when it was on sale thinking that I would like it better. Unfortunately the Fiamma style unrolls from the bottom whereas the Dometic is from the top, look carefully at the pic. This 2 or so inches made it so the the Fiamma rubbed my head close to the bus at all times and that was very annoying. I eventually sold it to a friend with a bay and he uses it well. The pic shows my Dometic with my friends bay with the Fiamma. You can just barely tell the difference if you look closely. (Don't compare the relative height difference between the two busses, I mounted the Fiamma on mine and it rubbed my head, his is a little worse for me, but he is only about 6' tall...) The other advantage, for me, of the Dometic was that I can make hard attachments points onto the bus and lock it into position, the Fiamma does not do that well.
YMMV. I'd recommend finding someone with what you are thinking of buying and try theirs out first. _________________ Dave O

Dave, what is the model # of that dometic awning?
I like the idea of a few extra inches.

That's the Catalina, whose case lid opens up and rafter arms extend from the center:
The previous generation is the Trans-Awn, whose case lid opens down and rafter arms extend from each side:
^Mine, which requires help to keep it off the slider due to the original owner using the 45° brackets instead of 90° brackets.
Both of these Dometic awnings are no longer available new; you'll have to source it used if you want one.
My dad is 6'2" and has no problem being under my Trans-Awn.
A bunch of other awning options: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=462083 . _________________ ~Kamz
