PostPosted: Sun Aug 09, 2015 7:13 am    Post subject: Fuel Pump Frame Bracket Mount Reply with quote

I have been wanting to install a new fuel pump as preventative maintenance before road trip season this fall. Everything is original and I knew my rubber mounts needed to be replaced, but it turns out I need to replace everything. I found the complete pump bracket at BD which solves most of the problem.

The issue I am having is that the bracket that mounts to the frame is so rusted I can't get the screws from the rubber mounts out. I can't tell if there are nuts or if the mounts just screwed into the bracket? Does anyone know where I can get a new or used one of these?

Cut the nuts off and remove the wasted rubber mounts, sand it or use convertor to seal it, paint it use it.

A piece of flat stock could easily be bent to match and drill a few holes if you want new.

Good to know those are nuts on there. I will need to buy some new ones along with a Dremel to knock this out.

Just a heads up if you are in the market for a Dremel. According to reviews the quality has really gone downhill on the new models. I picked up a German made Proxxon rotary tool for $118 shipped. Looks to be much higher quality. http://www.woodworkingshop.com/product/px38481

Here's where acid might be just the trick. If you've been watching djkeev's thread on his '86, you'll note he uses muriatic acid for corrosion/rust removal of small parts. While muriatic is effective, phosphoric will do the same thing. Or if you really want to go gentle, dunk it in pure vinegar. The point is the acid will eat away at that rust and will make it easier to remove the old/broken mounts. Just make sure to neutralize the piece after the acid. Lots of reading on this, and if you choose to go the acid route then do the research and be safe, it can/will land you in the hospital if used incorrectly. But a quick dunk in a phosphoric acid solution (probably 1-5 minutes) would free that right up and allow you to take a 22mm (IIRC) wrench and take the old mount right off. No fighting, no drilling, etc. Or as insyncro suggests, just fab up a new one real quick.

I didn't realize Texas had rust like that!

That looks like a good old Northeastern native youve got there.

Mine BTW cleaned up real nice. They didn't look much better than yours does.

As mentioned, if you use acid take precautions and be safe.

Those are NOT nuts on the bracket, they are stamped bosses and threaded to accept the rubber mount stud.

I placed some larger nuts as spacers for my new Bus Depot mounts had mighty long studs!

BelMetric carries 6mm studded rubber isolator mounts at a fair price.

OK, not nuts.
My bad Exclamation
Good to know, gotta check a Syncro mount, I can't remember if they have the same or not, but thought they had to be held to the tank straps with nuts.

I guess I will try the vinegar trick first since I will have plenty of time waiting on the new bracket from BD. A buddy of mine has been doing electrolysis for his rusty parts and seems to like it. No acid to deal with. I got some spray primer and paint to finish it off once the rotary tool arrives and I sand it down.

I'm new to Houston so haven't found a metal fabricator yet. The bus originally came from Florida, then Chicago and I picked it up in Missouri. Frame is solid but everything bolted to it looks like it lived in saltwater.

Dart, be weary of people around here in Houston. Every time I have paid someone to do something for me here I have gotten screwed.

No fabrication needed.

Go to Home Depot, get chunk of cold rolled flat bar.
Get longer mounting hardware
Get two spacers
Cut bar to length
Drill two holes for mounting bolts,
Drill two holes for fuelmpump mounts

Mount bar using spacers between the steel bar and frame to raise it up off the frame member.

Mount pump

Done!

Electrolysis is the best to take care of the rust.

The electrolysis setup looks so easy. Will give the vinegar trick a while as I am traveling the next two weekends. If no luck, will switch over to electrolysis. I don't have any big road trip plans until Texas Busfest in October. Skipping Busses Nowhere Near The Arch this year in Sept (really hope it isn't the last year as it is our favorite VW event). http://www.bnnta.com

We really like Houston but the old school VW shop has gone down to part time as the owner is looking to retire. http://smithforeignauto.com
I really need to get the AC fixed so if anyone has a recommendation for a shop that does old cars and R12 I would love to find them. Willing to take it to DFW or Austin.

I don't see why you could not use 6mm nuts in place of the stamped threads in the bracket. You could center drill the remnants with a 1/4" drill bit and be done.

Did you get that filter bracket from BD also? I need one for my '85 and Van Cafe' didn't have one the last time I asked.

That was the plan if it had nuts already. If I can't get the old bolts out then that is what I will end up doing.

I will have to take a look when I get home but I believe it has already been replaced. I had the fuel filter done along with all the fuel lines when I purchased it last year.

Looks like I have the home-made version. I couldn't find one on the BD website.

That's OG after an hour in Muriatic acid followed by wire wheel brushing and clear coat.

I'm pleased with the transformation from horrible rust to gleaming metal!
