This critically important relay is located behind the Right Tail Light.
This relay bumps up the idle speed when the AC is on, the Power Steering is in use, etc.
It is not protected and is subject to the never ending stream of debris and rain that finds its way down the Right Rear air scoop!
Here is mine when I Removed the Air Filter intake assembly......
I've redone a lot of my Van, I've fixed rust, I've cleaned, I've tested, replaced and rebuilt as needed.
I haven't any desire to repeat this mess and damage this expensive relay! Mice have already been gnawing on the wires buried in the leaves!
I figure VW was smart enough to protect critical relays and connections in the engine bay by using water tight boxes, why is this relay left to fend for itself?
I found this box in Home Depot. It is for safely storing your wallet, keys, phone, etc while on the job.
It was $10 so I bought it........
I drilled a 1/2" hole..... Should have drilled a 5/8" hole.....
I then cut a slot the width of the wires to the hole.......
I fed the wires into the slot one by one and then forced the insulation wrap into the hole as well.
I put a fuel line clamp on to keep it from pulling out......
I packed the wire slot and around the wire insulation with Dum Dum to seal it up.
I will mount it in the same general area the factory put it behind the Right tail light......
