Compare your M-Code to this one.
http://www.vw-mplate.com/mplate-29115.htm

I do not know why code 723 is not printed on yours. It is part of the D09 collection.
I would think it is a CEI?

723 Special sales campaign for 'Champagne Edition 1', paint color Agata Brown (L86Z) whith Atlas White roof, interior cloth in Parchment (beige grey) (1977)

Good luck

CC, you got any pics of the bus? If so, let's see them

Does it have any remnants of the interior?

The code for the Champagne isn't highlighted on your decoded plate, which makes me think it isn't a bubbly beaut.

What about the bus specifically makes you think it is a Champagne?

Sorry for the interrogation, but you can't wrangle a champagne without a lil bit of detective work. Wink

Super bummed about these guys...It looks as though we may never know their data, or save them. If anyone is in the San Antonio area, and feels like doing some of their own detective work, please look this place up and get back to me!

Funny, did no one mention this one, 082027, on Ebay?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1978-Volkswagen-Bus-Vanago...7675.l2557
Looks pretty nice, but for moderate nose damage.
I should buy this myself, (but not a good time personally), I have near complete interior and a pretty good CEII nose. OE paint, but not much of it!
I would add to this conversation, that I personally feel there must have been a few thousand of these built, at least.
I bought mine in 1982, from the original owner and got all the paperwork (alas, lost the paperwork in divorce chaos and the bus is long ago cut up being extremely rusty).
Back in the day, I remember seeing CE Westies and at least one other 78 CE II, in Cascade, eastern Iowa (and it was a beauty!).
My guess would be more like 2 every dealer, tho I do not remember seeing any at our local dealer (but I didn't get my first bus till 1982, so was not watching the dealer that close before that.)
Further, since joining theSamba in early 2000's, I have seen a LOT of cut up ones being sold for parts in the classifieds. Really bothered me because they were way better than mine!
I remember one with a Riviera camper conversion in Colorado, could have been bought for less than $1000. That would be my favorite configuration.

Pretty nice car. They NEVER came with whitewall from new. AFAIK, no tire company made C6PR tires in whitewalls. They look wrong anyway. Too effete.
BUT, I think they DID all have wheel cover trim rings. Further the stripes on this car are not quite right. One was quite pink, as I remember. Nearly all faded badly.

Hi All, great thread!

Here is my January, 1978 CE II Westfalia. It was titled by the first owner April, 1979, and I purchased it from him June, 1989. My third camper, fourth bus, and first automatic gearbox!

Something I was thinking about recently.

Anyone have any speculation or information about why VW/Westfalia went with the CEI paint scheme for campers in 1978 vs the paint scheme that standard 1978 CEII buses got?

No, but wait- a Riviera built from a CEII is a better camper anyway. Well, ASI's interiors were cheesier than Westy's.
I believe ASI did build a few from Champagnes. I've seen a few being parted.

speculation: the color worked better with the pop-top

1977 CE I Brochure: "20 mpg in the city/28 out on the highway" ?!
Volkswagen has been cheating for a long time...

I think you might be onto something. It was not til 1984 (?) that they started painting Westy tops to the body color or at least not bright white.

I am starting to work on My '78 after finally getting to Asheville. Is there a good source for replacement front door panels and carpet? I want to try and get as close to the original as possible.
