We've got a 1978 Champagne II Bus.
VIN # 2282102230
03/78 is listed on the metal plate in the driver's side door
Can't see my M code as I have insulation tucked up into the front of the Bus so as not to freeze when I drive in the cold...

Just bought this one from the 2nd owner, who purchased it from the first owner in 1982. It's been living in a garage in Corvalis, OR for more than 34 years. I'm blown away at how nice - and still original - it is.
03/78
VIN: 01642 (last 5 digits)
It has the original AC unit under the dash, so getting at the M-code plate is tough. Will try later.

Welcome, Sam!
That is a super clean bus! Very nice! I miss mine. Do you have the tan spare tire cover?
Try to get the correct tires for it as soon as you can. |

No spare tire cover - and those whitewall radials had me wandering all over the road so shortly after these pics were taken I got a good set of Hankooks and it made all the difference. I have the AC compressor but don't currently have it connected; also a nice hard cover for the spare that I need to assemble and mount. Original paint, needs a fresh coat.

Yes I can't imagine it would be in very good condition unless it was stored in a cool, dry place for all that time. But even still, if I found a NOS set, I'd be all in and buy it right away.
In a thread from 2010, someone mentioned that hazetguy had a set for sale 'a while back'. I have pm'd him. I hope he responds and has a couple photos of this rarity.
If you happen to stumble across any more, BD, I hope you let me know! |
Hi Tony,
I'm new here on TheSamba - but nevertheless you should read your PM's!
Greetings

Just wanted to say that this thread helped me out!
As soon as I can find a 4th rim (I have three for some reason...) I think I'm going to swap the New Beetle rims out back to factory rims, and install General Grabber tires.
Mostly because it's rainy and cold, and therefore I'm a little bored, I decided to try to determine what color I'd want to paint the rims. (All the ones I have are pretty beat up.)
It appears that the color applied by VW would have been white, so that is what I'm going to go for. Interestingly, all the rims I took off this Bus when I installed the NB rims seem to have been the "standard" silver color.
Also, out of curiosity, I found that I still have the paint code stickers. Ha ha _________________ Dave Cook

Adding my 78 CEII to the list. I've owned the van since 98 and it's been in storage since early 2000. The last time ran was in 2009 when I moved it into it's current residence, but I'll be moving it to another storage location in the near future.
Here's the mplate decoded:
VIN = 2282107934 |

Hello to you all
I have a stupid question.
I am printing new champagne stripes and I want to know what the distanse between the stripes.
Can anyone that have the original stripes chack it for me?
I know that the nerrow stripes width is 1 inch and the wider are 2 inch but I don't know what is the distanse between the stripes.
