Seems the alternator bracket cracked during our trip a few hundred miles back and I lost the tightening nut. Gotta get another nut and hopefully something to tighten the alternator enough to get home.
At the rest stop at exit 22.
Hoping to rig something up to get to ace in the morning.

Yes sir
Trying to figure a way to wedge / strap the alternator to the right to hold tension. Looks like their is a hardware store a few miles out _________________ ..."I live in my own little world. but it's ok, they know me here." -L. Myracle |

Good news here is that unlike the Type 1 engine, the Type 4 can run without the alternator belt, because the cooling fan is attached to the crankshaft. So what you risk is a dead battery instead of a cooked engine. In a pinch you can remove the v belt and limp home.
Trying to visualize your problem, and nowhere near you to physically help. If you can find a way to attach to an ear or anchor point, maybe you can get a cheap nylon strap ratcheting binder. Anchor it some way to the body near the battery and then ratchet it snug. This might get your alternator back in the game, but it will probably vibrate excessively. |

^^^ that is exactly what I have been visualizing for the past hour...
Now, if I can just find a suitable strap...
Gonna raid the trash cans at the rest stop in a bit. _________________ ..."I live in my own little world. but it's ok, they know me here." -L. Myracle |

If you have a decent selection of hand tools with you, head to the nearest chain link fence. Look along the top or bottom of the fence line; there should be a tension wire running the length of the fence.
You have my permission to cut off about three or four feet of this wire
Ya know? |

Isn't there a vw guy off the freeway near there? If I remember right, you can see the vw's from I-5. I don't know the name right off but I'll see if I can find it unless some chimes in. _________________ 71 Westy 1600 DP, all stock Bus 1

Maybe this will help.
J&j wekstadt 163 ferry rd, Ashland. 541-928-6618
Alan's Auto 306 Hershey. Ashland. 541-488-2936
I think the one I was thinking about was called road haus? Might not be Ashland but somewhere down that way. Good luck with it. I'm sure you'll figure something out. _________________ 71 Westy 1600 DP, all stock Bus 1

You know it!
Didn't have bailing wire so Lisa found a rubber bungee that was the perfect length. Got us to a hardware store where the split bracket was sandwiched between a coue of fender washers and a new bolt. Now thwt we are home and i am looking back at the trip, i have a question about the above -
Lets say i had a full battery, a full tank of gas , fired the bus and had it running and then cut the belt off! Assuming i didnt use any extra electrical devices/accessories and never restarted the bus - how far could i limp it home just on the battery? _________________ ..."I live in my own little world. but it's ok, they know me here." -L. You would need to know.
How many amp hours your battery is?
How many amps the bus is drawing running without the alt.
Don't remember how many hours. But it has been reported you can drive quite a aways on just the battery. Recharge over night and hit the road in the morning.
Clad your home safe.

I've driven around for a week + between charges with a dead generator, daytime only and no bonus electrical draws like radios. 2 weeks if you put one of those solar trickle chargers on the dash _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Typical primary resistance of a VW coil is 3 Ohms.
This means it pulls 4 Amps from your battery.
If you shut off everything by pulling fuses except for the coil, you could run your battery ( a Group,24) 10 hours to 1/2 discharge. At this point the battery voltage will start to drop and ignition will suck. If you don't pull any fuses there are a surprising number of things pulling current and you will probably get about 3 hours daytime and 1.5 hours at night. _________________ .ssS! |
