I know, its been awhile since the last post. I have been out in the shop, slowly getting back to it now that the shop is done and pretty much set up.

In an earlier post, I had shown a firewall seal retainer I picked up from Mika at Restoration Panels.

Now, this seal retainer is for a Split/Oval Beetle. I knew I could make this retainer correct for the 1962 with a little modification. When I went to check the fit of the retainer against the 1962 I noticed the contour was off.

From here I flattened one side and used the shrinker to match the contour of the OG retainer. Once that was done I had to make a tool to reshape the lip of the retainer. The tool I made worked well.

One of the last sections on the body that needs attention before moving onto the fenders, hood etc, is the rear window frame. This area had many holes along the seal channel and had been filled with epoxy by the PO. Also one of the decklid mounts had some broken spot welds.

This area is very tricky to repair. I had been thinking of different ways to approach it. I began by looking for some quality donor metal. It took a year, but finally found a 62 in a VW junkyard that had a solid rear window frame that they would let me cut out.

I decided to go ahead and cut a bigger section than I originally had planned for but I think in the end will be the best solution.

It has been awhile since the last post. Slow on the progress due to, life. I have been making sure to document the work I have accomplished. One area I had showed a little work on in a previous post, the rear firewall seal channel I was able to wrap up. Here are some photos of the work:

joey1320, both the anvil and vise are from HF. I have zero complaints about the vise, as for the anvil its lacking in quality. A couple areas of the hitting surface edge have chipped due to air bubbles in the casting process.

I'm glad to see you back. It's been a while. Excellent build thread, great photos (no photo bucket),descriptions and doing it right. I have the rear 1/4 body mount repair to do some time in the future and you have shown this repair really well. Much appreciated Very Happy
