I gotta get my kick in this dead piniata.
I used to tear down alot of bastardized sandrail engines, most of them blown up. I read alot of build threads, ect. I have a bad habbit of going into "freshen up" my motor and end up swapping a cam and adding a turbo, cant leave anything along.
My findings would suggest:
Rednecks that build a motor without proper guidance tend to overcam. (110 and stock heads 1600-1776 is very common to see, ive seen a bunch of 120's with stock heads too, usually with stock springs and pushrods "the redneck rev limiter")
Older guys that build Their own Vw as a hobby tend to undercam, they buy top notch parts, but use a conservative cam for the sake of "longevity"
Turbo motors tend to be undercammed, this trend is going away fast though as people realize a tsc10 or 20 is tiny, real tiny for the kind of heads most of us run today.
People are making better decisions than ever today. Knowledge is easily accessable if you can discipher through all the BS and bickering. |
Very insightful, thank you. I think I recognized myself someplace in there! |

It's not over-cammed...... it's under-engined. |
