I am planning to take it on a small road trip this weekend up to New Hampshire to visit family. Should be a nice little ride and I can get a feel for how she does under a little stress. I would like to get up to highway speeds because all I have done is putt around on secondaries so far. |
Make sure you grease the front beam before you go. |
Yup solid advice thanks Bob and Donnie-
upper torsion had no noticeable play but I adjusted it anyway and noticed the lock tab was about to snap off so I replaced that during the process. The beam took a lot of grease and the upper zerks looked like they had not been touched in a long time.
On the way up to NH I took some nice backroads and the car felt great- so on the return trip I took the highway and she cruised along smoothly. Really happy with the trip overall, except I seem to have consumed excessive fuel. Next project is to verify the carb jetting _________________ 1964 Notchback

Possible ignition switch failure yesterday-
I was about a 1/2 mile from my home at a traffic light and the car just stalled. I cranked it over and it reluctantly started. I turned left through the light and the car was losing power, I heard what sounded like a belt slip then smelled a hint of burning plastic.
After fiddling around on the side of the road a bit checking basics, I realized the ignition switch itself was no longer turning - I had to have my wife sit in the car holding the key forward so the wheel would not lock while I pushed it off the road into a driveway.
The key will not rotate to the 'On' position
I know this is a one year only ignition but is the the lock or the switch itself? If it was only the lack of movement I would assume it was a worn key or tumblers something like that but the faint plastic melting smell at time of failure has me wondering.
Any advice is appreciated

I haven't had a chance to dismantle the column yet and get to the root of the issue(s). I learned these ignition/indicator parts are 1 year only but I was able to source the electrical part of the switch last Saturday for 10 bucks. The part is new in box, but it looks like someone cut the MPC connectors( unless it comes this way) regardless I think I can splice the ones from my bad switch onto this one. My car came with a spare turn signal indicator switch and the cancellation feature doesn't work to one side so I Will replace this while I have it apart.
I also bought a NOS Ignition switch (mechanical part) with 2 keys from an ad on here. Going to get the column out and dismantled this coming weekend I hope.

Yes, the new ones came that way.

oops now I feel kinda bad because I talked the guy down thinking the connectors had been cut Oh well, it's someone I see a lot and it'll all work out in the wash.
I found Phil's write up and its awesome- going to follow it except i'll be using the correct switch. _________________ 1964 Notchback

Couldn't think of another person I'd want to own that car Stan. These 2nd design cars are still underappreciated by many. You got a nice one! I hope to get your old '65 DD WT panel back on the road in the very near future.

Hey Stan;
Nice Type 3. I suspect that you'll enjoy it a lot.
I wanted to add my 2¢ worth regarding "fuel injection problems".
As you may remember from our past conversations, these cars were new back when I was a young man working at the Dealer. At the time, I was the newest guy in the shop and got the work that the older guys did not want. So I got most of the electrical and fuel injection problems. It quickly became apparent that:
- Electrical problems were mostly ground related.
- Fuel injection problems were usually tight valves, generator/regulator problems, and/or the aforementioned ground problems.
And as you can attest to, there are some that really do defy fixing. I currently have a '69 Squareback that is awaiting my attention. I acquired it because it did not run. One of the reasons is due to mismatched fuel system components. Contrary to popular notion, the parts are not all the same. For example, a "B" ECU replaces an "A", but a "C" does not replace "A" or "B". A "D" replaces a "C", but only if it has a black label and so on ad nauseam.
Digging out my notes from VW Fuel Injection school back in 1973 & 1974, my memory has been given quite a jog. However, these ancient systems are actually fun to work on (kind of).
Sorry to ramble.
Best of luck,
Art |
