Very nice! Say "aeromech" if you get a chance take a photo of the "cam card" for the CB-2280 and post it here. I see different valve timings on some of the 2280 cam cards posted on the internet.
The cam cards I found on the internet for the CB-2280:

"aeromech"Would love to see a build sheet for your engine, I wonder if GemVW used 1.25 ratio rockers or if they used wide mouth pushrod tubes so you could install them later? _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

Here's an update 11/2/17
Last Saturday I was able to drive the bus with my new engine installed.
It was wonderful. No leaks, no adjusting things, lots of power, it never died, smooth power, throaty sound
So, as you can see I had not completed the external oil system yet. I'm working on that now. I mounted the filter in front of the left rear tire. It fits nicely in there
Last night I started making up 1/2 stainless tubing with AN flares and fitting them to the engine and filter. Soon I'll begin fabricating the 1/2" Parker push lok hose and fittings.
A few engine stats:
1800cc
88 thick wall pistons
74 forged crank 4340 counterweighted
L3 heads from Aircooled.net
Cheater cam with compatible lifters
Solid rocker shafts with stock rockers
Type 1 muffler with T3 dual dampers
Original as delivered Solex 34pict-3 with new jets and bored venturi
Original Bosch DVDA correct for 1971 bus
Throttle positioner, damper, and altitude corrector
1 1/2 qt low profile sump
Full flow system with filter. Might add cooler later
Functional thermostatic flaps
NOS Pierburg fuel pump
Berg 6 1/2 pound degreed pulley
Stock breather system
Fully balanced including clutch plate
Stock flywheel with 8 dowels
38 amp generator |

I got a lot done on the oil system last night and have about an hour to go. I should have it running again tonight. That is, unless I start playing with my iPhone X which was delivered 5 minutes ago. Can't wait to get home from work. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

I did my oil hose connections using 3/8" pipe -1/2" hose brass barbed fittings like these at ACN and took my bus for it's first test drive and about 2 miles down the road about the time I hit 65 MPH the oil hose popped right off where I has spliced the oil line with some pipe. That was 30 weight motor oil. I found I had to use double clamps! So be really aware of the possibility of the oil lines not staying on.
I lost almost all of the engines oil in seconds. But caught it. Better to run 5W30 or something lighter and use double clamps on oil lines if using barbed pipe to hose fittings. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

Ok Have the two Zeniths configured and mounted to the engine and have it running. Checking everything now. Runs best with the Accelerator Pumps disconnected. And Wow! It's right there! The Zeniths with that 24mm Venturi and these manifolds really match this engine will. Best Performance Yet. Single Video Dual Zeniths Video and Dell Video Same engine.
1679cc.
Need to figure out a couple of things with linkage before trying it. Here is what I have:
35.5mm X 32mm Valves L3 heads,
W-100 cam,
Steal Scat manifolds,
Dual Zenith NDIX 32 P010 carbs configured without choke and with Porsche No pathway between ports Bases.
24mm venturi's,
Jets:
180 210 Air correction,
120 main,
50 idle jets
Long fuel pumps, 55 Accel Pump Jets, #2 Nozzles (Which are large). (Linkage leverage set for least pumping).

Ok I adjusted the Accelerator volumes! With this trick with the straw. You collect about .33cc per 2 strokes of gas in the straw which can measure it. Kind of tight with 24mm venturi's though. I was able to get the .33cc's by lengthening the accelerator plunger linkages.
As far as jetting goes it seems too rich as it is sooting the plugs somewhat. Breaks up a little on revving but only if revved very quickly. Responds very well though. These old Zeniths need more TLC. Throttle shafts loose in the bases drips gas if pumped while not running. Need new Accelerator pumps and probably smaller accel injector jets.
Has anyone else set Zeniths up as duals? Thinking of trying 210 air correction jets but need 2 more. And or I could go with 25mm venturi's but I only have 2, same with 28mm but it would be just like the Dells with 28mm venturi's. Maybe just get some small main jets like 215's? _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

Thanks Spike0180 for that.
Another thing about this engine that I am thinking of doing something about and it has nothing to do with the carb's is. It smokes sometimes on start-up.
I know it's common on some Type 1 engines and they may only smoke on start up if left parked on a hill or at a lean. But this new engine level on the Bench, with it's New L3 heads has since I built it "Smoked Sometimes On Start" it seem to happen two or three times in a row then it will not smoke sometimes.
So need to figure out which valve guide it is? What is a good procedure? _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

Dan,
Are those L3 heads from ACN? My engine builder didn’t see $615 in the pair I bought. I never had them in my hands. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

I got the L3's directly from DRD others DRD heads were fine. One head might have a bad valve guide. But you know, I thought about this a lot last night and I think the problem must be the AA Brand 88mm ThickWall slip in Piston & Cylinders from ACN, I have an idea for testing them by placing the engine on each pistons' TDC in turn. Rocking the engine there, produce a vacuum in the chamber then letting it set 5 minutes then starting it to see if it smokes.
