AHEM.... The Church of the Crooked Mirror resents that statement, as the OP's bus clearly has the mirror splayed in the "Check Out My Patina Not My Blind Spot" orientation.

I tried it once and didn't like it. They have to be straight or I just feel weird inside! _________________ Robert in Memphis

1500cc ? |
Sounds like a 1500 from a '67 bug. Of course, the piston spigots are the same size as a 1600, so it could be that. Or it could have been bored out larger. Not a lot of details there, so you might be better served looking for one or two oil pressure plunger plugs on the bottom left of the case. Regardless, it's a German case and if it holds oil pressure at operating temp, no need to worry about it.

What are your plans with your bus?....
More pictures would be cool.
I' m in the seventy club. Mine is same original color as yours, stock 1600 sp. Factory Eberspacher, Euro delivery. It spent late summer '70 traveling through Europe. Netherlands to Germany, Finland, Greece, before it was shipped to LA, Ca. Those are the service stamps in the book.
1970 is kinda an end of an era. It's the last year of 4 wheel drum brakes, and round VW hubcaps.
Peace |

1970 is the last year of the tough old boot VW buses.
Now that I have developed an understanding of non-power-assisted four wheel drum brakes hurtling down mountain passes with signs that say "8% grade, trucks shift down," I have to say that I appreciate the solid engineering of these brakes. Yes, they will fade. No, they do not grab the front wheels as readily as tippy toe power disk brakes, but they actually do have stopping power if you learn that they actually demand that you press that brake pedal like you mean it. 100 pounds of force at the pedal? heck yeah.
Mirror angles? Just to catch the road more fully . . .

As of now, Running and stopping... Safety, fuel lines accelerator & Clutch cable replacement,
An opportunity presented itself as the seller had to many projects going on to work on this one... the offer came up and I took a chance.
I think so far I am pleased with what I have for the cost of it. _________________ ROBERT

Good deals are hard to pass up. Looks like it's fairly complete, in need of some love. Here are a couple of shots of my 06/70.

Today I got the stuck passenger wheel drum off and can roll it around.
also since the compression was way low, time for a rebuild.
