Bought a 70 westy. It's ugly as new born sin, but I got it stupid cheap because it's a "parts" bus. When I get it home, I find it has nearly no rust. No motor, some rust in the windshield lip, little in the front floor, and that's it. Odd since it sat open so long. Anyway, my question is this. Someone took the gauges, and when they did, they cut out all the dash wiring including the one year only fuse block. No wires even to where it should be.
If I decide to keep it and work on it awhile, wiring would be top of the list. What would you do? Attempt to repair what is left? Replace the 70 fuse block? Rewire the whole bus with a new harness? Some form of upgrade to a different, easier to find block? Or is major wiring issues a deal breaker for you on a bus? I have an auto electrician friend who has very affordable rates, so any things possible.

If I was faced with replacing a harness or splicing onto a cut one I'd go with a later fusebox, why not improve like VW did and just follow a later diagram? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
Please don't PM technical questions, ask your problem in public so everyone can play along. If you think it's too stupid post it here

Definitely what I lean toward. Wasn't sure if that upgrade was a common thing and someone recommended a specific year fuse box for ease of conversion. I can easily get a late bay box and wiring, or I'm not afraid to buy what I would need. _________________ MAKE FORUMS GREAT AGAIN

Depends how far back they cut the wires. Maybe get a harness out of salvage yard would be your best bet.

Good luck

Perfect place to start, thanks! And they cut them as far back as they could under the dash. _________________ MAKE FORUMS GREAT AGAIN

having had to replace a harness in my 70, I know how you feel...
just get another fuse box and make it work like tcash posted.
to do a nice, clean job get some non insulated butt connectors and heat shrink...makes for a nice clean repair. honestly, doing a complete harness isn't THAT bad, but time consuming.....
and you suck. I have a bus here from Texas for a Subaru conversion. this thing is so clean, I want to crush all of my stuff and start all over _________________

Thanks for the correction. I used to be a nice guy, then I ruined it by exposing myself to the public. |
