I wasn't looking to replace Duke--Impossible.

He'd let anyone in the house, shop, allow them to clean them both out, then lick you to death as you were leaving.
He was really a Mellow Guy--

I saw this situation, then looked in Scout's eyes, " I gotta get him outa here."

Cost me a couple of bucks , but so far it's worth every penny.
He's only 4 years old--he still can learn some new TK tricks-- Wink

I am a old softy, even though you guys don't think so-- what he had going, wasn't too swell, I don't know if I saved him--or he saved me.
Either way it has worked out good.

Plus he's a pretty guy--

Thanks all for the kind thoughts. It sucks when a member of the family is sick... it certainly clears the schedule. We often get busy with life and take them for granted at times, yet they are forever loyal... always ready to jump in the van as soon as that slider opens. So at least for me dogs and vans are closely tied together. After all, we take them on vacation and they hang out when we're working on them. So how are they not part of the vanlife? In any case, no significant changes for my boxer one way or the other. Will probably be in a holding pattern for the next couple of days. I hope my next post on this thread is one of recovery.

TK, I'm glad to see you have a new family member. He's a fine looking dog. He'll never forget that you rescued him. It's a great story, and like many of our rescued vans - damn those previous owners! I'm glad this pup now has a loving home.

That is a perfect analogy.

Like finding a parked, abused Vanagon and giving it a new home.

That picture was right on the money.Wink

Well, I'm happy to report that my dog seems to be on the mend Smile I've had to force feed and force medicate him for the past few days, and it seems whatever was in his system has worked it's way out. I'm cautiously optimistic, but all signs are moving in the right direction. I spoke with one of my neighbors and he informed me that some a-hole has been poisoning and stealing pets around here. Evil or Very Mad Apparently this has been going on for months now and whomever is doing this hasn't been caught yet. One local was unfortunate enough to have his 13 year old dog found dead in a ditch, all four legs hogtied. What kind of sick person does this? Not sure if my dog is one of the recipients of this evil or not, but the thought of someone poisoning my sweet pup boils my blood. I hope they catch this person, and I hope it's not me who catches them.

In any case, on the bright side of things this whole event did spark a conversation with my vet. I asked about what are the things an owner can do in an emergency and he passed along some ideas that I thought I'd share here. He's helping me put together a small first aid kit for my dog. Most of this is similar to what we'd carry for ourselves, but here's the list we came up with, or rather what he suggests:

-Home first aid kit with bandages, alcohol pads, coban, scissors, etc
-Vaccinate against rattle snake bites if you live out West
-Hydrogen peroxide for cleaning and to induce vomiting
-Styptic powder to stop bleeding
-Vitamin K tablets, milk of magnesia and activated charcoal for poisoning
-Amoxicillin
-Syringe for irrigation and oral meds
-Muzzle (scared/sick pets can bite)
-Thermometer (fever type, a dogs normal temp is 102.5)
-Benedryl or other antihistamine
-Thread and small needle for stitching
-Medical super glue
-Emergency medicine for pets book, real or pdf

Of course if you can, contact a vet if you're in cell phone range before treatment. Know the local vets and emergency vets contact info before you venture out. Some helpful info:

Animal poison control center: 1-888-426-4435 (fee applies)
American Veterinary Medical Association: 1-800-248-2862 x-6631, myveterinarian.com

Well, it finally happened Sad

I'm grateful to say that Crash left on his own terms. We happened to be back at our home in the Yakima valley where he grew up and spent the majority of his life. On his last day he woke up and enthusiastically ate his breakfast, then walked outside to sunbathe for a few hours. In the afternoon he came back inside to sleep on his bed. At some point in his sleep he slipped away from this world and into the next.

RIP Crash. You were one of the coolest dogs I've ever known. Thanks for giving me another year when I thought you were gone for sure. Thanks for being here for the birth of my son. Thanks for all the great road trips and keeping me warm on those cold nights in the van. I hope you're playing with Mavis and eating all the pizza crust you can find. Goodbye old friend.

-Kevin

Don't grieve too long for now I'm free
I've followed the path God set for me
I ran to Him when I heard His call
I swished my tail and left it all.

I could not stay another day
To bark, to love, to romp or play
Games left unplayed must stay that way
I found such peace, it made my day.

My parting has left you with a void
Please fill it with remembered joy
A friendship shared, your laugh, a kiss
Oh yes, these things I too shall miss.

Love it.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
My life's been full, you've given so much
Your time, your love and gentle touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your head and share with me
God wanted me, He set me free

I'm sorry to hear about your losses guys, but it seems like Vanagon owners make dog lives great.

Our Little buddy Calli has rolled onto finer pastures. She had a great run of 16 1/2 years. I have gone through this before but I shocked a the depth of sorrow I feel over her passing. These furry friends bring such joy and happiness into our lives, and all they ask is that we be their friends.

Please do give your doggie an extra hug for me, their time is far too short for the love they give.

From the 1996 movie “Sleepers” when two men were sitting on a bench in the park, the old guy of the two feeding the pigeons;
Lorenzo:
I didn't know you like pigeons so much.

King Benny:
I like anything that don't talk.

End.

When you get sad about an animal that has passed, remember how much joy they gave you and you to them. All interactions were 100% pure & honest, ya gotta love that.

Lost our Emma after 13 years of unconditional love. Decided against another dog because it would just be to hard to go through it again (5 dog in our 45 year marriage). Some how we just couldn’t not have a dog. New pup is some kind of a hound mutt who is stubborn as a mule, and we love her bunches.

I lost Joey last year - this is in memoriam to the best companion I have ever had. Those who met him are blessed with his memory. I hope to see him again someday . . .
