I guess you could say I'm strange in the fact that I migrate toward cars that others would deem scrap. I have been this way all my life. I've been building cars for over 35 years now and have gotten back into VWs.
For the last 4 years I've been dragging home parts and parts cars to put together one nice Bug. I know that waiting for the "right" car would save time and head ache but I love a challenge and I cant stand seeing pre-68 Bugs scrapped.
This project has morphed over the years, but now I have a clear plan and focus because I have found a 1956 Oval.
As a kid in high school, my first car was a 1961 Bug and I loved it, but I couldn't help but love the Ovals just a little more.
So fast forward 35 years...my first Oval.

Like I said before...this project has morphed a time or two but the name has remained the same. I call it Project Das Frankenbug or Franky for short.
I have collected some "kind-of-special" cars over the last few years to build this. The one thing they all have in common is that they are mostly trash with some decent parts to help make a super cool Oval.
I have a 1958 factory sunroof that will donate its top and other parts...this car was in a crash that rolled it on it's side and pretty much mangled the upper LR quarter up into the roof but luckily the slider is still good.
I also have a 1960 Euro semaphore car that will donate alot of things but most importantly the semi posts.
So in the end I will have a 1956 Euro Ragtop (clone).

Love your build, I will be following this one for sure.
Going for the pre-1953 early split rear window look like the photo? it will cost you; $750 plus shipping/tax for the metal panel, around $150 for the glass and seals, and your labor and welding skills...

Cool build, plus you are right in my neighborhood too. I'm over in St. Charles, have a '55 un-molested/un-restored Oval Sunroof and would love to come check your project out sometime! Keep up the creative work!

Any updates ? My 56 is sitting. I did order some 36 Hp parts - rotor, cap, etc ...but I'm going to try to put them on my 59 first to get it running...(1979 is the last registration).... |
