Great work!

Thanks!

Got most of the welding done on the upper part of the lid...shot a quick squirt of rattle can on to keep rust at bay in the mean time.

Rolled ol' Franky out of the barn and loaded back into the mad scientist's lab.

Got rid of the giant Volksrod rear tires and slipped on a set of 205/75's. Still going with the big n' little raked look.
Probably run a set of 145's with 2" dropped spindles in front.

Tires will clear the fenders so I wont have to swap out the long 67 axles after all.

Tried on the repaired "W" lid. Still needs some tweaking, but over all, not bad. Fenders still need some love, but they are German and they are original snowflake. They are worth the effort to me to save them.
The one on the right side is an original dimpled fender from my old 1958 parts car.

Continuing to fit parts.
Once again I have original German fenders for the front but beat to death. I'll save these because they are real 1950s era tube fenders.

I know this car is never going to be correct for any era, but I love the challenge and reward of saving cool parts that might have ended up being recycled into a Honda minivan.

I like the way a deck lid offset makes them look tough. Cool

Welded up the ripped bumper area of the left rear fender and also welded up numerous stress cracks.

Fender has got it's integrity back and is good and solid. It was kind of floppy before.

I'll trim out the bumper slot when my new gaskets come in.

I think snowflake lights look too high on the fender when not running the towel bars. Since we're not running the towel bars I decided to lower the tail lights 1".

I concur! Tail light placement can make or break a car! Are these late model snowflake fenders? I can barely make out the lip in this picture...they look like it. I forget what the progressive refinements says about dimension raised in May 55 when the snowflake tail light was introduced. May have been more than an inch. Very nice work saving this car!!

You are right...tail lights can make or break the look. I love the placement of the egg and heart lights.
Fender-wise, they are both snowflake fenders, but the left side is from a 1960...the right side is from a 1958.

The first body repair I will be tackling once the body is off the chassis is going to be the fenders. I did start on the worst of the rears last weekend where they are torn, fractured and rotted through. My initial thoughts were to replace the whole bottom sections at back, but with the compound curves and no english wheel I am starting to rethink the process. I could go aftermarket replacements but the quality doesnot appear to be there, plus there would be quite a bit of waste. Donor fenders are getting harder to find. I need to friend Ron Covell.

REALLY enjoying following your project build, great skills ! And sorry for the thread highjack.

Yes, I agree having Ron Covell as a friend would be awesome!

I dont have the luxury of an English wheel either.
Sometimes it pays to think outside the box...I didn't have any decent rear fenders to cut up to repair these snowflake fenders, but I did have some extra sacrificial fronts. I cut sections from these that were similar in shape to the thin and rotten parts of the rear. I used a right front to repair my left rear. At first glance the 2 fenders dont appear all that similar, but if you look close at certain parts, they're close enough. The whole front edge of the left rear fender is replaced with a chuck of a front. The mounting flange bolt hole spacing is very close. A little heat and hammer and dolly and you can fine tune the sections to work. Heck, I've even got a little chunk of a 66 Mustang in there somewhere! Dont tell the stock Nazis though. Laughing

For example, here's a piece that's close.

Your secret is safe with me! I will scout around for used fender parts...56-66 or do you think later sheet metal may work also ?

I think any rears up through the early 70's will work

Very nice! Will the whole body be epoxyed once the welding is done?

Been working on the "W" lid.
Got the body work roughed in to 180 grit and sealed with epoxy.
I'm pretty happy with the outcome so far considering this lid was a wall hanger at best when I started.
