that is getting to the point where you can start working on mine ! lol
Nice work to date, colour me envious. I may be able to start body work this winter, but supposed to snow on the weekend. I hope to at least get the body off chassis and access the work ahead. _________________ June 1956 VW Oval Beetle |

That is a ton of work to save a W lid! I've gone back and forth with the standoffs. I can see a ton of air being drawn in that gap though. |

You are going to run one carb with 2 barrels, or you are going to run two single barrel dual carbs? I ask because the single 2 barrel carbs are not a great carb for the 1600. There is a small flat spot, due to intake manifold length. That is why dual carbs excel in the VW world, short intake runners! I got an old set of single barrel Kadrons, just sitting on the shelf, that were on a 1600 a few years back. That was a super fun engine! _________________ Jimbo

Single 2bbl...I have an old Deano manifold that runs a single Porsche Zenith NDIX I'm going to try. I have an early 010 distributor to run with it too. Gonna stick a header on it and I have a small Eagle cam from CB.
I know the flat spot you are referring to and I'm not a big fan of the Bugspray or Weber progressive...thought I try this old school set up...was supposed to work real well in the early 70s.
If it doesn't work out I have about 4 complete sets of Kadrons that I can build a set from. _________________ 1956 Oval

This has been a tight budgeted build, but certain things I'm not cutting corners on...all about the look.
The flake will be used on other areas of the car as well...kind of color coordinating. |
I like that mode of thinking. When you have a vision, don't compromise. _________________ Check out my truck brought back from the dead... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=420762&highlight=sprayed+blood

you 've got to be kidding me.... WHAT !???
I am about the biggest '57 Ford Fan this side of the pond and it is so great to hear about another 57 Del Rio owner. Are you a member on the 57 Fords International forum ?
If this is getting too much off topic we should probably use pm.
Had my first 57 Ford ( SD Courier, 302/C4) over 20 years ago. Currently own a Del Rio ( project in 1000 pieces, 351/AOD) and a registered and streetlegal 4dr country sdn with 292/3spd Fordomatic.
loving the 64 Cyclone engine is that really a 289? late 64? and love the 64 Comets. Owned a 65 and a 62 before. I just put og 260 chrome valve covers and NOS Falcon Sprint water slide decals on the SBF in my 34 to mimic the '63 appearance...I am sure you know what I am talking about
Wow that 36 Cpe is going to be sweet with the Y block and traditional front axle setup with wishbones! Love Y blocks too. building a 312crank equipped 0.080 overbore 292.(322)
I can absolutely understand your 'hot rodding' attitude to this Oval build. To me they were never seperate things. Hot Rods, Fords and Veedubs are just all the same to me. Most anything that goes on a Hot rod works well on a VW as well. I am not talking about 'Volks Rods' necessarily. there are also enough old pics to prove Veedubs were at Bonneville in the 50s 60s, the Inch Pincher was a former track racer in the late 1950s and Vitone even made it into 'Hot Rod Magazine' in 1959 with the Ghia. Awesome !

been working on my 302 equipped 34 Ford all week long. sometimes we need a little break from VW stuff... |
Very keen eye sir...1936 to be exact
Building a '36 3 window, but will have a '56 TBird 292 in it.
The SBF is a '64 model K code 289 from a Merc Cyclone. That is destined for a 57 Ford Ranch Wagon Del Rio.
I've got a full service shop...if it's cool, I'll build it. |

Still gathering engine parts together for assembly.
I spent the first 13 years of my automotive career between 3 different speed shops...'84-'97.
Couple of the biggest things I learned when it came to engine building was, new parts don't necessarily mean better parts and cleanliness is an absolute. Also, measure measure measure.
When I started this engine build I planned to obtain as many OEM VW parts as my budget would allow and any aftermarket would be high quality proven stuff.
With the factory engine case rock solid and ready, I dug out the OEM crankshaft I found years back. I cleaned it thoroughly and hand polished it.
Mic'd all the journals and compared to specs in the Bentley. All fell in spec for .50 mm/ .50 mm.
