Any updates ? My 56 is sitting. I did order some 36 Hp parts - rotor, cap, etc ...but I'm going to try to put them on my 59 first to get it running...(1979 is the last registration).... |
Unfortunately I dont have any updates at this time...'Ol Franky is waiting patiently for his turn back in the garage. When I chose to leave the 9-5 world at the dealership and pursue my dream of restoration services it tends to put my personal projects on the back burner.
I am, however, getting ready to load another VW into the chamber. It's a '62 Single Cab that will soon be getting some resto work. I'll try and put a thread together for that.

Still collecting parts...look what I found on my local CList.
NOS and very clean inside.
I think it goes perfect with my German Hot Rod theme.
Oh and the best part....it was only $20

How did I miss that?!? |

They say patience is a virtue and that good things come to those who wait...
It's been about 6 years since I started collecting parts and parts cars to create Das FrankenBug. In the past 6 years, I haven't had much time to work on it, so when the opportunity arose, I jumped on it. This weekend started a 30 day marathon build up on my project.
First thing I did was dig out the car that started it all...the 58 sliding rag. It's been sitting in a warehouse for just about 5 years waiting to be an organ donor.
That's my buddy Larry's beautiful 67 Bug behind it...I restored that one a few years back.
Next...my 56 oval body came out of the barn and was loaded into my mad scientist lab.

Continued removing patch panels today...
I have this body sitting on a restored chassis that has the original VW pans and Napoleon hat and I know it's square. Whoever attempted the repairs on this car didn't get things back in their original places. The "replaced" heater channels are sitting flat and there is a 1" gap at the rear crossmembers and a 2" gap at the front bulkhead. They have to be redone.
Pulled out the right side heater channel...didn't take much... most of the welds broke loose when pried on.
Critters used the heat tube for a Habitrail and managed to rot it out in a few places.
The budget wont allow for new heater channels, so I'll fix these aftermarket ones and reinstall.

Cut the right side quarter off...decided to use as much of the "B" pillar as was salvageable to have some strong original guidelines to align with.
With the previous repairs being done so far out of whack, I had no confidence in the position of the door jamb so I will get the quarter as close to the remaining factory points and go from there.
The quarter from my donor was fairly solid but did have some thin spots, so I had to fab some panels and repair it first.
I'm using the trim holes as one alignment point. Quarter will go on and off numerous times as I make my decisions on where to do the final cuts.
I want to have a fender on it when I start welding to keep it in alignment. I have a couple right rear fenders to choose from but I only have one late 1950s era dimpled fender and that's from my donor 58. It's beat up but I can save it.
I figured since it's easy access now, I'd clean and seal some of the harder to reach areas while it's off.
