Recently acquired this 1964 Notchback Sunroof. Been stored in a barn for many years.

Tell me what is missing/non stock?

Looks like an S model with filled belt line trim holes.

Check under the front fenders along the trim line and see if you feel any filler (Bondo, etc.). The S model should have belt line trim and the hood should have a grab handle (chrome piece).

You're missing the rear license plate light housing and the "Volkswagen" emblem is incorrect.

Front apron appears to have been tweaked toward the bottom - did someone install a Mickey Mouse grill? Hard to tell from the photo.

Hard to tell from these pics.

Looks like mickey mouse apron, but it has the license plate bump in it so that says one of those 2 things is not correct.

Looks lie an early (to early 62) hood emblem also.

What is the chassis number?

It's obviously been repainted and they shaved a lot of the chrome trim. Like ataraxia said, it's missing the hood beak, side trim, rocker trim, license plate housing, front bumper, bumper guards and they painted or removed the window trims.

If you clean it, save everything if you don't know type 3's. Some parts are really hard (impossible) to find.

Front bumper is there, just on the rear of the car.

Looks like the mickey mouse grill is on the outside of the car? This has been tapped with a cal look stick. No front rear window chrome and or the typical side chrome removal.

Have you ever seen a FULL Mickey Mouse grill on a 65?

I got what you were saying...I have a 64 and know what they look like.

The MM grill 'officially ended' at the end of production for the 1964 model year and VW was doing a partial MM grill on the apron (no cover piece) for the early part of the 1965 MY. I was wondering if a rogue full MM grilled apron made it out in 1965.

I haven't. Plus, that one is screwed on from the outside. I've only seen a couple of 65's with a 1/2 Mickey on them, but those are early 65's. Most of the other 65's I've seen are smooth under the bumper.

Part of me would like to see the car washed, but then that would hurt it's "barn find" sellability. Shocked

Thats where it gets muddy. The pic above can well be a 65. Ive seen other pics of 65's but cant remember if vins were provided. This discussion was done years back in this forum - but God and or the powers of Mr Barnes can do the diggin on that.

I'm curious about *when* VW stopped the partial MM grill. I'm wondering if it's as random as the cowl stamping we discussed in another thread some months ago - you know...how some 65's were single indent and others were double indent and it didn't seem to matter where they fell in the production run.

I wonder if the partial MM grill is similar. I've had both early and late 65's but neither had the partial MM grill (like Keith Park's old car)

Like I said, I've only seen a partial MM on early 65's. This might be another one of those deals like the cowl vent set up. Wink

MM grilles ended in 64. Early 65's had the half MM, but not every country got the 1/2 grill for whatever reason. I think it was all in the parts book for which VINS they started and ended at.

3rd number of the VIN means it's a 65 model year car, even though it was built late 64.

Thanks. I am aware it's a 65 model year. Just indicating that it has the half mm apron.

Several parts 'ended' at a given model year but VW continued using them on early models of the following year. For example: I have an early 64S and it has grey armrests (ended with 63 model). This is why I posed the question about the FULL MM grill - wondering if there was a 'rogue' full MM grill 65 out there.

In addition, I have had a couple of early 65's but they didn't have the half MM, leaving me to wonder just how early the car had to be to have the half MM grill.

I would think that if true, only early Aug 65's would have the old front. Im telling you - we debated the shit out of this years ago in a thread. I want to say I was approached at a show where someone said see - here is my 65 - look at the full mickey mouse. Unless I loosing it at 44.

Geeks, the lot of ya. Rolling Eyes

Home Market cars were the ones that got leftover parts from previous model years. Germans are cheap, ah, I mean frugal so using up old parts on home market cars helped keep costs down.

This is why we see things like '66/67 "Z" armrests on German Type 3s through 1969, for example.

VW wasn't the only company that did this- Mercedes did it as well. So, it would not be difficult to imagine a '64 Home Market car with a full Mickey.
