I see a center tunnel hose for the heat to the dash also looks like a push-button switch. I would say that is a early '64 not a '65. |

61-64 changes were generally made by the sequential vin #'s, not model year.
In 65 when they started "model year" most changes (not all obviously) were for the model year.
Jason and everyone that's seen a lot of -66 type 3's, how many times have you seen a 66 or earlier type 3 listed/titled with the wrong year? I've seen tons. I would bet the guy with the "65" MM actually had an imported 64.
I can think of almost 10 I personally had just by myself.
My best friend even had a "65" imported Fasty. Vin was of course low 316.

I'm looking on my phone so pics are a little small, but I agree. Looks to have red needle gauges too. _________________ Patrick

Nice eye for detail...solves the full MM grill issue (other than it's mounted on the wrong side of the apron sheet metal). |

The year you bought it as opposed to the manufacture year defiantly plays heavily in this. That's why I debunked my own post on that picture above. It was listed as a 65 and has the 65 attributes but is indeed a 64. _________________

Sorry for the confusion, the guy found the title and it says it's a 63..
Chassis # 329***
So I am assuming that the interior color is wrong?
I will get it cleaned up and more pics soon. |

0329 makes it a 1964 model built January 1964. That makes more sense since the side marker lights are on the belt line (64 and later) vs. above the belt line (63 and earlier).

My '64 was titled as a '63 too
we've discussed this before, but for your benefit and others, the theory is that since these cars were all imported one at a time by tourists or military, this was very common. You would stand to save a significant amount of tax money importing a "used '63" over a "new 64" _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

Finally got the car home and started going through it. I found the license light housing, 1500 emblem, front hood handle, and some other misc stuff stashed under the hood.
So far I know I'm missing the side trim pieces, plugs for the torsion holes, rear bumper and the bottom portion of the air cleaner. |

Bingo.
You'll see this done from one European country to another in those days as well.
In USA, the dealers and importers could never seem to get it straight that German car mfrs started the model year on 1. August, and thus a lot of early model year cars were titled incorrectly as the previous model year. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Old Charlie - fellow I met in Encinitas had a 63 he bought through a dealer in Encinitas. He approached the dealer and asked how it could be done to get one of these new T3s here in the US. The dealer ended up buying a couple of used - year before notchbacks and had them sent over. Reason being is that they were not allowed to get the "new" ones. So they found a loop hole. Imported these cars and old Charlie had himself a slight used one year old 63 in 1964. Years later he also commented on the fact that when he had it pained from Ruby red to a Pearl Weiss - the pass door had filler in it from an apparent accident in its one year in Germany. Further proving his story of "used" notchbacks being imported to the US by dealers then sold here.
Old Charlie went on to help the dealer import and sell several T3's and T34's over a 10 year period. I told this story to Dave Love - his 62 is said to of been bought from a dealer in the San Diego area back then - and we were wondering if old Charlie and his dealer were the ones that brought it over with some other T3's. _________________

My great- uncle was a dealer in Ohio when I was growing up- you could order T3s and 34s through the dealer if you knew who to ask, but they were all Tourist Delivery until about the beginning of 1965. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

The arch of that bumper looks like a front bumper. The proper rear bumper doesn't bow out like that & should be parallel to the rear apron.

The rear bumper has a small factory hole in the corners and the front bumper does not. Maybe the pictures are throwing it off a bit but I assure you it has the rear bumper on it. |
