Did you use the same heads when you did the upgrade or did you put new ones on? I only ask cause I had a bug do a similar thing and I had a burnt valve in the head letting it blow by the valve. Maybe do a leak down check to make sure all is as it should be. Just my .02cents, like was said though I experienced this on a bug not a type 3 so take it for what its worth. |
I'm going to get a new cillinderhead tomorrow, came up really cheap and is brand new.. so i have to give that a try too.
Where did the leak come from?

don't assume anything....start from scratch, adjust the valves, set points, time it properly, clean those carbs and synch them...oh and measure compression while you are there |
Indeed... i'm going to start from scratch anyway. |

Manifold to head gasket, as soon as I took it off, I saw it was not sitting flat. the impression on the gasket was uneven.
I would video it without the air cleaner on it so you can see if it's the air jet blocked and spitting out there, or barking back out the intake. Make sure it's warm first. Mine will bark and fart for a few minutes until it warms up, just something you live with not having chokes. You can watch the AFR go from 16AFR to 13AFR at idle while it warms up if the LM2 meter is on it.
What jetting are you running in the dells?
any chance you have access to an O2 meter like an LM2 to check how it's running while driving. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Finally found some time, to work on my '66 again.
The shed next to mine is vacant for a while, but there's a working carlift (bridge? we call it a bridge overhere) that i could use last weekend. so i did!
Pulled the engine out, and did some minor rust treatment while i was at it.
Excuse the somewhat large pictures:
I love working like this, my back loves it as well!
Here's a shot of the pan, i was there anyway:
And the other side:
So now the engine is out and on a workbench, next to it's FI Buddy.
First i'm going to replace the cillinderhead on 3/4 with a brand new one and see if that makes any difference.
If that doesn't work, i'm going to go ahead and swap everything on to the FI block and see how that works out.
More bodymass than brains... but hey... it keeps me off the streets. _________________ It does not matter how slow you go, as long as you don't stop

That was my thought as well. Very nice car. Keep in mind the FI engine uses a 200mm flywheel (12 volt), and you might have to clearance the bellhousing for it to fit. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
