meet dumpy bus

although not a fan of the late buses, I fell in love with this bus a long time ago.

she is a survivor and has killer patina. very minimal rust (for a new england bus)

we are going to try to get by with a used engine. the owners know how I feel about it and we are on the same page, so we are all good there Cool

the beam is a bit crispy so we are going to re do the whole suspension. brakes etc were done not long ago and honestly other than shaking the fillings out of your teeth, the bus drive pretty dam good for being dumped.

here is the donor engine. we are just going to clean her up so it looks like we care. basic stuff...t belt etc etc

as good as she gets

the intake was just as ashy, so that got the full tilt overhaul

you bring it, i'll bling it!

this swap will go fairly "quickly" as we have been working on this for months. still a ton of work ahead of us, but we will get there asap!

we need "LIKE" buttons here!

nothin' keeps me cool like putting something hot between the slot

the engine and transmission will be available for purchase...the whole deal, ecu, everything....I was going to try and drift is sideways, but decided the lug nuts have more torque than the engine does

new AFM, TSII, fuel lines, tune up etc....served them well for about 8k. just leaky and tired. kind of like how I feel....

I have a junk single cab I could do all the mock up in. lots of special custom machining go into my throttle bodies and intake elbows. I would need to make sure I had all my bases covered before I could sell the parts (if I even want to) the swap isn't for the faint of heart or the shallow of pockets...

in this box there is over 2,400 worth of machine work to these elbows

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

and I have another couple hours of modifications to do....that doesn't include the cost of the parts either...

throttle body getting skillzafied

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I have a lathe, just not big enough to handle these....sucks but the machine shop I use is killer. cheap? nope. but I NEVER question their work. if I need something made to 2.7575 it's 2.7575

but once the last credit card payment is done and you have years of nothing but gas and oil changes, it make sense. not every bus owner wants to dick around on Saturday with a carb, points or deal with whatever fit the bus may throw.

So what are you doing there ??

Also the oil sump shortening, did you make it wider ir just cut it and weld a flat replacement onto it.

I ask becuase I'm at the same stage, engine is cleaned up but these sumps do hang low, my worry was loss of oil capacity would be a headache?

nobody wants to pay what it's worth for the install, let alone what I would need to make a true early bay kit.

well, I shouldn't say that. real deal guys don't have an issue paying for it, but I will tell you this...the whiny "think they can have me do it for them on the cheap" days are OVER. fuck giving anyone a break on the price, fuck being a bleeding heart, fuck being a nice guy and trying to help out.

you see this?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

that fucking piece of paper costs me THOUSANDS of dollars a year so I can LEGALLY work on your car. just because I am in a shop that happens to be on the same property as my house doesn't make this place any less "real" than a 10k sq ft shop on the main strip. I turn out more work faster (and by myself, mind you) than 1/2 of your specialty shops could even imagine with a full staff.

(sorry, been thru the ringer with 1 swap....everything is always my fault and I am always the asshole....you haven't seen asshole yet....)

it's not my fault YOU decided to put 20k into a 2k car....you could have pulled the plug any time....get over it

sorry your hobby is my profession. get over that too...

anyway

got the beam out of the ol' girl today. it of course wasn't without drama. ended up cutting 2 ball joint nuts clean off....they rusted internally and would try to spin, but the threads just wouldn't let them back off.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

thankfully, no surprises in the frame rails. but the beam was getting crispy

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I had to harvest 1 trailing arm seal. just said fuckit the beam is junk anyway and went after it with my air hammer

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

once I folded the seal retainer back, I slid the seal off like a garter belt. if only it were that good....

got a real nice beam to slide back into dumpy

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

also went and did a new center pin. it was like cheating doing it on the bench
100x easier. because we are forced into sub-par aftermarket shit, the cap fit like throwing a hot dog down a hallway. here is a little trick

take pair of dykes tweek the edges to give it some grabbing power

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

new arms and joints all ready to go

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

and a set of wagenswest drop spindles

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

you need to trim the backing plate for the spindles to play nice with them so I broke out my SKILLZsaw (baa dunnn chaaa....I'm here all night, don't forget to tip the waitress! screw the tip, give her the whole thing)

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

so, contrary to popular belief, I am a nice guy and thought the alignment shop would appreciate spiffy camber adjusters

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

got it in

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

and the old one is crusher bait

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

and look what turned up today. a box of genuine Subaru parts!!! what a concept!!! all the stuff fits AND works the first time? hold me back!!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

so, there you have it. hope to have the other side together tomorrow and re set the rear suspension to level her off.

that was an assload of work. I tip my hat to you in the driveway folks. sorry if I have been more off color than normal. captain+pepsi make for interesting vocabulary
