Yes! And extra thanks again to campingbox. Not only are the parts great the after sale service is too. He provides instructions with the spindles but was also there to walk me through the process. Again, I am a newbie to this type of work so I had lots of questions! (Despite 20+ years of bus ownership) _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

I was told by the PO that this was a hippy bus on Saltspring island (our local hippy commune) for years. That hippy was to blame for the giant roof home (was covered by plexi glass) and the fine wooden rocker panels. _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

Something else I learned ed about are the springs for the star adjusters that go on the backing plates to hold the adjusters in place. I am told you can't buy them..aocal Vw club guy made these for me. Barring the terribly over size rivets, this is what it should look like:
Again, probably not new to a lot of folks, but new to me!
And finally installed: _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

I also realized I was missing one of these clips that hold the front brake lines in place. I made one up.
Look out, Gerson! Seriously though, I have been thinking I need to learn some basic metal fabrication skills...gotta start somewhere!
Looks like this when installed:

I don't think I would trust that. I believe the original is made from spring steel and holds tension on the collar. Being that it's on a critical component, I would have an original on there. Good practice anyway _________________ EMPI Power Rules! |

Thanks for the tip. I'm not worried about it popping off..it's a friction fit. Also, there was nothing there for years when the PO was driving it. _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

They have a little curve in them to hold them tight but if it's in there tight it's probably ok.
You could probably get someone to send you one.
I don't think I have any laying around but if you want me to check, PM me.
There should also be a rubber seal where it goes through the body but you probably know that already. You do not want that metal line rubbing against the metal body. _________________ How to Post Photos

Light grey, welcome to that club even though you are repainted. Maybe try stripping it back to see how good the og grey looks! _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. CB 044 heads, AutoCraft rockers, chromoly push rods

Yes, the long term plan is to try to strip it back to OG paint.
Well, I got about 5 hours in over the last few days. It is a slow process. Got one side stripped, cleaned and wire brushed, and brushed with Ospho.struggled with a tie rod end replacement and failed. Need bigger pipe wrenches.
This pic is flattering; they look way worse in person. 12 years sitting...

Again, the drum looks much better in the pic above... It is basically orange from rust, but Ospho turns it black:
And a question.. My wiring from the ignition runs under the bus very poorly and comes up in the driver side battery tray and goe s to the coil and to some other thing I don't recognize..
Where is this wiring suppose to run? A description of the path from front all the way back would be appreciated... _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

That's a good question. Originally I thought of a sunroof but I am leaning towards filling it back in if I can. I don't want to cut the hole larger for a stock size sunroof so would have to go custom size. Regardless, it will be a big investment. Also I like the idea of bringing it back to stock by filling in the roof. Probably not a pop top since we will only camp in it occasionally. _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

Had to wait on brake parts. 125 bucks doesn't get you very much..

Not much progress hefe. Had to deal with burst PS lines on my DOKA and a tune up on my wife's ML320.
I did win my near 2 hour battle with the outer left tie rod though. In the end it was a 2' pipe wrench on the rod, braced against the ground, and a 2' crescent wrench on the ball. A few xises of penetrating oil seemed to help. _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

I decided it is foolish not to replace the front wheel cylinders. $200 along with a few other things..

Well, I am almost there. Just struggling with brake bleeding and hoping for a brief test run by year end...unless I need to replace more parts. In the meantime, here is what I will be dealing with in future.
And a giant hole in the roof..visible is my new $30 bay window seat.
And lastly, the engine bay. It's pretty clean!
