Thanks, Dubskii. I wish mine was a 57 too!
Your paint stripping inspired me to do a bit more today. It sure what the bright yellow is but it's on there pretty good!
I am surprised how beige the "light grey" is. _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

Here is a better look and unfortunately there is not much light grey in here. The main light beigy colour is bondo. I should have known this was there as I can actually see the dent from inside
The rear cargo door is bad too. For now I think I will put this on hold and get back to welding. This will have to get fixed eventually. I may try a few test patches on the other side, which looks more promising.

I should be sleeping but I couldn't resist a little more investigation. It looks promising as I get past the damaged area...

Just read the whole thread and thanks for all the detail. I'll be doing a lot of the same stuff so I appreciate your help! Great bus!

Out and about today. Still running a bit off and wants to stall intermittently, but I don't want to mess with it as it's running the best it's been.

So we had a great and long summer here and I got to drive and enjoy the bus a bit with my family. Just a few shirt trips since I am still working out the mechanical bugs and much of the metal work is still incomplete.
Insurance expired in October but I have not been very motivated. Did a little on my boat resto project but not much, and nothing with the bus. Now the rain is here...
Got a little motivation and started welding up my floor patches.
I have to seam weld the length of the cargo floor 4 times! I tell you, next time I wouldn't bother with patching in to save $$. This is going to take me 10x longer than if I bought the floor half sections... _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

Getting there on the floor seam welds. One more to go and then some finish grinding.

Yup best advice ever. I made the exact same mistake trying to save a few dollars and ended up doing double the amount of welding. . I shoulda bought the full cargo floor and welded one seam down the middle. Now I have two full length welded seams and misc patched areas. _________________ GFK

Same with the front floor, even if you took a brand new complete floor, cut it down the center at the heater tube (so you don't have to pull the heater tube) then butt welded the two halves together and plugged the rest it would still be hours (days?) less work and mess than the outer patch panels. |

I'm sure you're right about the front floor...but I already made that mistake too!
Not much progress despite the holidays..family time, replacing floors at home, not time wasted.
Saw the "mig light" and had to have one. Made it out of leftover cargo floor. Works great- highly recommended. No matter how it where I set up my lights, I always seem to cast a shadow on the gun tip...this fixes it.

Nose is coming along... Weld, grind, repeat:
And the floor is no longer full of gaps and holes, though still a lot of grinding to do:

I had a day off today. I did a bit of welding and grinding on the front floor.
And started the driver's side:

The gauges will stay, but the wiring dangling through the front floor had to go. I will find a new way to mount them.
Nowhere near done, but I got it roughed in..

It took most of today to do the final prep, fitting, and welding. Still have to seam weld and grind the side of the new panel. Wolfsburg West front floor panel was a great fit. It only needed some trimming/resending at the a-pillar and a bit near the seat stand, and I had to carve out the hole a bit where the headlight wires pass through. Highly recommend this part.

Also this weekend I made a little guage pod. I will probably paint it later, though it is stainless. Took most of the day to redo the wiring...it was a mess.

And I played with paint stripping a bit. What colour is L345? I found a post here saying krylon river rock was similar. But it's what I would call beige... Much lighter than the paint I found on the lower half. It was under the green, then bright yellow primer, then beige, then a grey, which I think is primer?
On the top half under the white is beige, but not the same as the lower. It maybe was repainted to "match" the bottom? Then yellow primer, beige again, and grey. Shown here is the outer, non original beige on the upper body:
What colour is L345??? Is it beige? Different gallery pics of it look very different.. They call it light grey but is it really? _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048
