Well after 3 days of work I finally have a functional door with acceptable gaps. The skin will require a little more adjustment. Had to hack and reweld the inner structure as well as put a 20 guage shim behind the lower hinge. Then used a jack to take a bit of sag out. I thought i might be shopping for a new door! It's not pretty but it is buried inside the door anyway...

Hi folks, do the rear bumper brackets bolt to the bumper or are they welded? Mine have been hacked beyond recognition. It appears the brackets have slots for bolting, but my bumpers do not. _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

That and a lot more in the original VW dealer parts manuals.

The brackets are intended to be bolted to the bumper. Likely to allow for a bit of adjustment during installation. Can you show a picture? _________________ "When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it." Henry Ford. |

Yup, it's a mess! Bumper is twisted up from an impact so someone just adjusted the mounts to make it work!
Made some progress yesterday... Not exactly the right way to fix a door but it worked.

Gross.
If you take it all apart you can straighten that a bit by sticking a crow bar under it and prying it outward. I've done that a few times.
Of course the best way is to unweld it from the bumper and actually fix everything. |
The latter is going to be required to get rid of the puckers in the bumper at the plate welded to the blade areas. Plus missing the bolt spacers. Will need those in place to sort out how much to bend all back to where it belongs. Otherwise over rider uprights will not fit to the bumper blade. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Good to know. Right now the overriders are all on but are a bit twisted up as well. This project may wait... _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

Bent up a patch for my 42 ×42" roof hole using this rudimentary method. It woked pretty well considering..
And built frames to hold it all in place temporarily:
Next step is to screw it in place, mark and cut. I will do the final bending with a hammer and dolly..

It was a tough decision. Sunroof was tempting but the reviews of the aftermarket sunroof kits are not great and they are expensive. I would rather put 1000 bucks towards safari windows and repair panels for that area. I tbought of a custom poptop or mega subhatch but both would be a lot of work and time. I want to drive this thing. In the end original is always a good choice and this was a hard top kombi, originally. _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

I got my fuel guage working, but it has constant power to it, which seems wrong. From the wiring diagram it appears it should be switced from the ignition, though it seems to go through the turn signal stalk first? _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048

Should it have constant power though? Or be switched off by the ignition key? _________________ 1964 Kombi- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=640048
