Nice work!

I see your heater hoses but not the Radiator hoses......????

I want extra fuel carrying capacity but was thinking more along the lines of an Auxiliary tank behind the main tank in the space where the parking brake adjustment is....... Somehow........ Maybe ten gallons or so.

Hmm, yea, ok.

Radiator is not in front. No front-to-rear radiator lines.

I have a spare vanagon tank that I have been planning on using. I will cut off the additional front humps. I would then still be able to use the stock sender and use run a switch at the front to switch between tanks and senders. In looking at the body, some items will need adjustment, most notably, the rear shift linkage rod will need an extra jog. I assume that with the front humps cut off the aux tank, it will still be above 10 gallons and with the stock tank will give me a range of over 600 miles, which is plenty good as far as I'm concerned.

Very Cool, steel fuel lines are a nice touch.
Many are looking for this, time to go into production.

Looks great. I'm about to create a fuel cell my self, yet I was thinking aluminum. Is SS better?

btw,
Van-Cafe has some 21 gallon South African tanks in stock. $350.00 each and requires new mounting as it is 5 gal. longer than stock 16 gal.

That's pretty great work, but I have to ask why? Are you planning to drive in Outer Mongolia where there are no filling stations? Why carry so much extra weight?
Not trying to be an ass, actually curious why.

From the website description.

"This tank uses the stock evaporated parts."

Does this mean that those stock parts are already NLA, having evaporated? Wink

According to your 24mpg statement, 960 miles to a tank is fabulous. Where can I join?

I don't know about the OP's reason of course, but for me.... one of the attractions would be related to the big difference in gas prices between the states out this way... some places in Cal are almost 5 per gallon instead of the 2.20 range. Be nice to know you can just cruise right past all that.

So you can drive from Davis, CA to New York City and only stop for gas twice.

Your back and prostate must be in much better shape (or just younger) than mine.

No plans at this time.

Likely among other things, but we won't go there.

I spent 16 years living with a man that asked me that nearly every day. He never "Got it" and I don't expect you to either. GO your own way, and I'll go mine, just like I did then.

For the record, it is only more weight when I choose to carry more weight.

I like choices, I associate them with liberty. They terrify others. I'm ok with that.

Yes they do have some tanks listed on their webpage. I considered one, but having already run a stock tank with a 10 gallon auxiliary tank I knew I wanted a lot more capacity. Its also a lot of work to install one and would still have a massive chunk missing out of the top.

I'm no expert on tanks, but I will say my decision to go the route i did was based mainly on cost and the ability to do the welding myself. I can tig but haven't done much lately.

Steel is cheaper by FAR.

It is also adequate, and I really see no downside, unless of course it rusts out and I have to replace it, which I doubt seriously will happen.

I would expect aluminum to be double and S.S. triple.

Thank you all for the positive comments. It was a fun, challenging project that I have been planning for years and am thrilled I did it.

I want to encourage others to GO FOR IT, whatever your project is.

Great idea - I like it.

I'd like to do something like that for my rusty syncro project as an aux tank.

One of my biggest gripes on my recent trip of 7000 mikes was the ridiculously short travel range the stock fuel tank and the stock WBX engine deliver.
Carrying only 15 gallons with what? a 15mpg engine doesn't take me far away from civilization..... Or reasonably priced fuel.
I ended up paying $2.99 in Idaho this Summer because I needed fuel, little town of Lowell on US 12. If I Had greater tank capacity, I would have waited until Missoula to fuel up.

I Totally get it!
I added an extra fuel tank in my Datsun B-110 back in the early 70's when getting fuel was a half day process of getting up early and waiting in lines!

The NIXXON era........ Wink Thats right Barb, Those were the good days! ....... Ketchup, with natural mellowing agents.
