Hey all,
Need realtime help here. So my van started running super fat and i went back to investigate. I was able to limp it home. The green o2 sensor wire has a crack about 1/4 inch back from the female connector and so the outer wire is touching the center wire. What is the proper fix here? Do I just carefully snip the outer wire back to a clean portion of the center wire to where they no longer touch?
Thanks

wouldn't a new sensor be the proper fix?

That would be a fix except it is on the van side of wire not the o2 side.

You could do that. Use a layer of good electrical tape to cover the break in wire. Or....

Slide boot back, (wd40 can help here) cut off connector. Strip outer wire casing back about 1/2", cut outer wire strands flush to outer casing. (covering end of outer casing at strands with a layer of electrical tape may help but may cause rubber boot to bind) Strip inner wire casing, crimp on new female push on terminal. A layer of electrical tape may help here as well. Slide boot back on.

I don't recall the wire gauges involved here but since the green coax is relatively short.... if you're using an inexpensive wire stripper, starting with next largest strip hole may help reduce risk of of cutting into the wire strands. e.g. with a #16 wire, set stripper to #14. Pull the stripper straight away, not at an angle.

I have to wonder if a given hole in a wire stripper is made for both AWG and metric.

Neil.

I agree with Neil that, if there is enough slack in the wire (and there usually is) just trim it shorter and use a new connector. The coax doesn't have to be up near the connector end so trim it back a bit (say 1/8" to 1/4") and use shrink tubing over the works to keep everything in place and insulated.
