I would say these threads should be allowed, as a general rule, (considering the rise in all this crowdfunding phenomenon) but subjected to a high degree of moderation. In the end, the forum viewers should decide if the cause or reason is worthy of their money. Some things might be, some stories might be more interesting and inspiring than others, and some causes might be just the opposite. _________________ 1965 Sunroof Beetle

Asking for money to fix a car won't ever get money from me. Cancer or other causes yes, but fix a car, pay for a wedding, etc. - absolutely no. |

If they do allow it with moderation there will be a big fat gray area in the middle between cancer and weddings with a multitude of reasons for funding. I believe it will cause arguments and a headache for admin. My opinion would be to ban all of it. There are other places you can go to donate your money. _________________ Schrodinger's cat walked into a bar and it didn't.

I don't see a problem asking for donations for worthy causes, but for your personal enrichment is just poor taste.
I raise funds for cancer research, they do not go to me or benefit me in anyway. But asking for money so you can fix your "hobby" car, go on vacation or a wedding is going to meet with some "Samba justice". _________________ Glenn

Asking others for donations to fix your own car, house, vacation or wedding is pretty crass. if you've made some poor decisions by "loaninig" to friends/family & can't afford to fix your own whatever, you sure as hell don't have the right to get bitchy when others start to call you out, ESPECIALLY if you're asking for 2-3x the cost of the repair. Man up & sell the nice wheels on your car to offset the price of the repairs. Personal accountability, find some! _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

My take on this would be;
I have always felt this is a VW site for sport and hobby of Volkswagen.
I honestly do not understand why request like that would be here in the first place. Poor finacial planning on there part. Do it more locally then globally. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

I'm with Glenn on this one.
Too many schemers out there.
I'm not going to finance your poor decisions and actions either.
If I know someone down on their luck or drowning in their stupidity..... I'll be first in line to help..... As long as they arent pissing away what little money they may have on Cell Phones, lottery tickets or booze/tobacco.
But......
While I would help....... Probably not with cash.
You need engine repair? I'd fix it if I can.
You need shoes? I'd buy you some.
You need food? I'd feed you.
Just dont try to scam me.
Years ago, I was good friends with the only diamond cutter of note between San Francisco and Portland.
He was very well off. He would give the shirt off his back IF you needed it..... But to scammers? Watch out! He somehow had a 6th sense and just knew.

I can some what understand donations and asking for a REAL cause or need. . but... a marriage, burial, engine overhaul....a set of brakes ...
Give me a damn break. |
Get off your ass and stand on a corner with an honest sign that reads.. "I just want money" .. or get a job..
Have some damn pride....
As an experiment....Once I offered a guy on the corner a job with a "will work for food" sign. After he heard that it involved labor (chopping and stacking wood)... he decided it wasnt worth it.. and simply asked for a few dollars... (as I suspected that would happen)
I had to restrain from punching him in the throat...
Many donation request are generally based on a bunch of tear jerking sob stories... ..

I honestly hope Everett will read this.
The Moderators here are already incredibly busy just reducing spam and filth. Add to it scumbag filtering with "Gofundmylazyass" threads and you've got a huge undertaking. There are many legitimate threads as Glenn clearly stated, but if looking for those means wading through the slime of deadbeat dope threads, I'd almost rather see neither. So to ensure some free askings...
My proposal would be that each and every fundsy thread topic include a simple coded line such as "Crowdfund: ______" And it is automatically locked. That way, lazy or legit folks can still ask for money, but readers can choose whether or not to participate via PMs and emails/links etc. And it would not require the hands-on moderation when people start going ballistic on each other. If there is no action on the thread, it simply slips to page 2 of the forums and disappears forever from our psyche. _________________

I'm sorry to all of you. I neither wanted a big debate or free hand out. I was just out of option I respect this site and all it stand for. That why I purchased the motor from someone on this site but being a disabled veteran means I only have some much to put in my ride and I put all I can but another member of this great group deceided he would take advantage of that. The law will not help because of it being in 3 different states so I'm out all my car funds and no motor. And it will take me 2 to 3 years to save the amount of money I put in it so far to get a newer one. SORRY again I cancelled the go funding and ask to have the post removed forgive me my sin. _________________ Look off in the distance it's a bird it's a plane no it's a frog no it's just little old me Underdog65 and my Sweetpolly passing your way. |

Underdog65, first off, you actually did ask for a handout. That being said, I'm sorry for your predicament & thank you for serving our country. Perhaps you could request a good set of used cylinder heads & maybe a set of useable Pistons & cylinders, that way the community might be willing to help out & you would only need to get a new set of rings & a gasket set. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I purchased the cylinders and piston the block was a total waste and yes I did ask for a little hand out but as I said I felt I had no other option and I thought people in this hobbie would understand that's where I made the mistake I will not make again thank you. I give. _________________ Look off in the distance it's a bird it's a plane no it's a frog no it's just little old me Underdog65 and my Sweetpolly passing your way. |
