The pans are new, done by the PO along with the heater channels before I purchased the car. _________________ ----------------------

I spent few months trying all kind of chemicals + angle grinder / drill / dremel. Then I called a local guy with a mobile sandblasting machine. He came early in the morning, by 10 am everything was stripped, spent another few hours cleaning the residue and drying and by the end of the day I had 3 coats of KBS frame coater and one of top coat.
There are places where you can't get with anything to clean or scrape and (I believe) sandbasting is the only reliable way of doing it.

Thanks for that information. It looks like I just need to remove the lower nut and replace the seal/boot. I'll do both sides while I'm at it.
There is no one in this area who does VW air cooled ball joints, I think I called 20 different shops. _________________ ----------------------
