I just stumbled across this in some old paperwork, it's from what I think is Car&driver from May 1990. Fascinating to see this was a possible response from VW to Mazda launching the MX5 !

No matter how long I study that drawing, I can only spot one of the "many styling cues lifted from the original Karmann Ghia" that the photo's caption claims have been incorporated into that design concept - the circle VW logo.
Perhaps they were referring to the ridge line on top of the rear fender that flows down into the taillight ... you know, the one that is clearly visible on the left side of the vehicle, but appears to be missing completely on the right side.
What I can plainly see when I study that drawing is a very early rendition of what we now know as the Porsche Boxster. |

have you ever had a karmann ghia side by side with an Audi TT, even the TT owner commented it seemed like the modern version of the KG |

This is a video of a new concept of a ghia that I found. Another thing is that the orange ghia is my ghia before I bought it when it was parked for 10 years.

Here is the only concept that I have seen that captures the great lines of the karmann ghia -

The Peugeot RCZ is another modern car that appears to have been inspired by the Karmann-Ghia.
