Anyone know recommended torque for the following (1976 Type 4 engine):
Alternator adjustment bracket nut (holds bracket on fan shroud stud)
Fan shroud to engine nuts (holds fan shroud on engine case studs)
My Bentley and other ref. books don't seem to consider this information important. |

My Bentley showed me many other similar M8 studs into aluminum like the intake manifold to head or the engine bearers to case, all of them said 14' lbs _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
Please don't PM technical questions, ask your problem in public so everyone can play along. If you think it's too stupid post it here

Did VW ever use studs in any of those places? _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Get hold of the index card sized charts that give torque specs and tape them in an obvious location either on your tool box or somewhere in your shop area. There are both English and metric charts available.
A lot of fasteners don't need to be tightened all that carefully, just use an appropriate sized wrench and learn the feel of a fastener as it nears its yield point.
For fasteners that I feel are somewhat critical like the ones that hold the fan shroud to the block I like to use loctite on the threads. |

An odd memory related to those four fan shroud nuts......will have to check the parts book. My first 411....1972......the first time i took off the fan shroud.....it had locknuts. Tbey were the same size and style that thd strut bushings on 411/412 used.
They were 8mm 1.25 of course......but had a 14mm hex. They were the old mechanical spring insert steel style locknut. ...of which I wish ai could find now.
They are the only locknuts that are really safely reusable. They were 14mm hex instead of normal 13mm mainly to incorporate the locking insert. Ray |
