|

One of my outer rear bearings completely self destructed. I'm working on them and was not sure how far to press the outer bearing? Since there is no hard stop in the sleeve other than the spacer between the inner and outer. Anyone have any tips?
Thanks

Check your Bently. I'm sure it tells you. _________________

On the outer, there is not a bearing stop. Press it in until it is flush with the seal ledge. _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace

when I did my first set of rear outer bearings, this was my first concern. I noticed the wear pattern of my old bearings and they were in the center. I would like a proper press tool that would stop at the right spot. That bearing is a little delicate also since the rollers are caged there. The inner bearing is so much easier than that outer one in my opinion. _________________ TP in the Pack (I am a cyclist)

===== PSA clarifying an old thread that has a good searchable title. =====
Thought I'd add this pic showing that taking the Bentley literally is "wrong".
Bentley writes: "press bearing in until seated."
but there is no seat.
I think they meant to write: "press bearing in until 'VW472' is seated."
Not knowing what the VW472 tool looks like, I went thru the measurements with a caliper and confirmed that the outer race should be positioned just about "flush" in its bearing bore.
Looking at thedesign of the bearing it's clear that there is a couple mm tolerance either way in the final position, but if you press it down until it stops (as if against a non-existant seat, the bearing may be destroyed.
The 'stop' is the rollers jammed against the spacer.
When you drive, the rollers will be rubbing on the spacer.
Here are two simple ways to set the outer wheel bearing depth.
And note that there is up to 2mm tolerance either way so if you end up satisfying either of the condition on the pic, it's good.
Also note that on the OTHER side, the housing seal is pressed down against the circlip, about 5mm deep into the bore. _________________
