On a related topic...
Thinking of adding something like this to my on-board kit:
Anyone in Sambaland with gobs of experience &/or recommendations?
I have a strong preference for all metal handles like this (or the similar ARB brand, or _________ ???)
TIA!

Don't forgewt your can of Hair spray and a match. I had a buddy of mine fix my almost brand new Michelin MXL tire and cut the cord and 500 miles down the road there was a big bulge in the side wall which made the tire use less.
Those things work, but my tire guy says he has seen that same thing happen numerous times.

Not sure what this means. Do you have a recommendation or just commenting?
Please clarify...

I think hes referring to the clips of people who spray the hair spray around the bead of the tire then while spraying light the hairspray on fire and it pops the tire on the bead... or use a tire lever lol |

I have one of those. I went to plug a tire that had a nail enter at an extreme angle, and I could not insert the plug.
However, I had a cheaper kit, and a friend used it to plug a tire on a trip, so I they are good to have. Just a warning that with no air in this particular tire, the tire would just collapse trying to push the plug in. and I think, pinch the hole. I could have tried to ream the hole, just decided to take it to the shop, along with another tire problem. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

Thanks...just thinking of secondary backup to my very good (1 y.o.) D-rated spare.
Planning a June trip to S. Utah & hoping to spend at least a handful of days off pavement.
Waded through lots of Utah threads here & looking forward to what looks like a variety of
roads/trails for a sturdy 2WD rig (well maintained/mostly stock configuration)...
I just don't want to be stuck out in the desert alone, with only 3 tires & no cell service...
Any other opinions out there, please post 'em up...

I've used these many times over the years.
Where it really works well is those situations where you hear it before you go flat, have picked up a screw or something and you just take care of it in the next parking lot.
Usually I don't lose more than a pound or 2 pressure and back on your way. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

Make sure you also have a tube of tire rubber cement. many of the new fangled kits do not have it. Must be new tech plugs, but I want all the options I can cram into a leak!
Also, you do have an air compressor right? _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

on the washboard forest service roads out to the boonies here)...

That hair spray thing works a treat. I've only used starter fluid but it is so easy it's funny. And it only takes a quick "psht". But one thing they never tell you. First, remove the valve from tire stem. It will pop the tire on with hot expanding air, then the air immediately begins cooling and will return to close to its original volume in about 20 seconds, and often pull the tire back off the bead by collapsing to a vacuum. If you have an air source instantly at hand you can avoid it - get it on there. But if in doubt, the missing valve allows the tire to suck air in through the open stem rather than create that vacuum. _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1988 Toyota Supra 5 speed targa, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

I considered posting this in the "wall of shame" duct tape and gull wing debacles thread but since its not remotely close to a VW....

when I first saw the ad, I thought part of the green top was actually building in background. I was enticed further when I realized it was part of the camper.
