I see that GW is selling heavier finned drums and I'm curious if anyone has tried these yet. They look like something from another application that has been machined a bit to fit.

I saw a discussion a few weeks ago about them, but I tried to find you the link of the thread, with no success Mad

I have a set here...beefy.
The fins are a new look for sure.
I am still going to have them trued as I do with all new brake parts.

I assume you meant "trued". I have seen this several times. Wouldn't it make sense to heat cycle them a few times (i.e.use them) before doing that? I'm not saying it is not important, as my drums currently need it.

If you wish to heat cycle go for it.

Sounds like you haven't fitted them up yet. Curious about the fit and finish.

Everything except the backing plates will be new.
They fit fine.
I personally don't like the look of them, but they aren't seen behind rims with small openings.

They are heavy, and that is good for heat displacement.

SA drums are NLA, so these are your next best thing.

Wow thats a lot of unsprung weight! What does a wheel and tire weigh? What does that do to your carefully selected shock valving?

Any van that I am worried about with reference to your question would have custom adjustable suspension and rear disc.

These drums are for stock vans and are designed not to warp, same as the SA versions that have dried up.

for someone with larger diam off road tires, concern of unsprung weight is already thrown away.. but greater heat dissipation from the greater rotational mass just in the tire alone would be helpful.

Plus, while camping you can jack the rear up and use the fins to make salsa on one side and mash tatoes on the other.

I have a set on my Syncro Multivan. There are heavy and super sharp, I like the look of them as well. My stock drums were toast so at almost the same price as Chinese made Ate's I'm happy with them. I haven't had a chance to flog em but they've got to be better than my stock warpy drums they replaced.
I did end up replacing the studs, I run Rheins and I had about 4-5 turns of an alloy lug nut. With stock steel wheels should not be an issue, anhy thing other than that I'd replace the studs.

Got the GW finned drums last year. Now going back to stock when I get the chance. I've been getting a horrible pulsating when braking. The shop pulled the drums and turned them. They said one was slightly out of whack while the other was way out of whack. After turning them and remounting, there was no change. weird. Maybe something else is off that's causing the drum to be off. The shop didn't charge me for the fruitless two hour detour. Taking it back in two weeks for a swap back to stock. We'll see then if anything changed.

I have this issue and it ended up with one of the hubs being out of kilter. Installing a different hub fixed the problem. This could be a factor in your pulsing brakes.

The shop did mentioned a possible hub problem. Will have them look into it while swapping the drums to avoid another visit. I had to panic stop on the freeway and the whole van shuddered. The pedal was bouncing so hard that my foot almost slipped off. Beyond irritating.

In my experience, while it is a pain to do, you get a better drum machining job if you use the stock hub with the drum bolted to the hub with the lug nuts vs a plain drum. This replicates best how it sits on the stub axle spindle. The drum centers just don't hold it square enough to the drum lathe with the lathe adapters. I am not saying it can't be done without the hub though.

on my new to me van the rear brakes pounded and at times (randomly) would drag and be close to smoking hot..
issue was in the aftermarket rims twerking the drum when torqued.

I had a pair the original GW heavy duty drums and could not, after multiple attempts to eliminate the pulsing caused by them, went back to stock drums and all is well. Contemplating Burley Discs in the rear now.

Update - replaced the GW finned drums with stock replacements and the pulsating stopped just like that. Must have gotten a bad pair.
