Has anyone used 401 Restos in Rhode Island for anything? I searched the forums but found nothing. I was hoping to get a thread going with feedback (positive and negative). Here is the website < http://401restos.com/default.aspx > Thanks. |

He posts all the time on the cal-look.com forum. Search for 'the "project"...' to see his newest car. His username is schell 59.
He seems like a stand up guy and knows his stuff.
He did the work on a car featured in Hot VW's in December . _________________ '55 Sedan Oval

Tim and Cindy are great people and i've seen a number of their cars. In fact i've judged a few at the Litchfield and Terryville shows and they are of a very high quality.

Samba members,
I have not dealt with Tim and Cindy on an extended professional level but I have spoken via e-mail and phone. Tim has a website with some fantastic pieces and in the midst, err finish of a sick drag-bug build. he will be or has been featured in Hot VW if I am not mistaken.
Having had my 66 beetle totally decimated by Curtis Fisk at Maryland Aircooled Performance. I have a very tall task and financial burden to overcome. I will be posting pictures of the ungodly mess that he left me to correct, while never refunding any of the 5700+ dollars he was fronted for a solid stage 1 of a 3 stage restoration. Before you scoff at the 5700+ he was also given all the parts. The only parts he had to purchase was never supplied when the project fell through.
Speaking with Tim offers a breath of fresh air and what seems to be more than capable hands and work ethic. I had animated to Tim on several occasions that when I recuperate some of my lost funds I will be contacting him to have him assess my Frankenstein Beetle and correct it.
If Tim is still interested and wants to resurrect my car, I firmly believe he will make it whole and gorgeous once again. Check out "the project" on Cal-look forum and you make your own educated guess.
Brian

Would you trust your dream with this guy?
Take your time, sit down with a cup of coffee read it in it's entirety and just drool.

Hey all,
Wow...almost a year since I originally posted this thread. I was very happy to see some activity and such positive feedback for 401 restos. Thanks to all that have posted. I exchanged a few e-mails with Tim back last winter...he was very helpful and seemed like a genuinely nice guy. I also saw one of his cars at Litchfield this past summer...very nice work indeed. I think it's great that us northeast guys have a shop like 401 nearby that specializes in VW's. I hope to have 401 do some work on my resto in the future...keep up the good work Tim.

Tim was able to get me the last pieces I needed for my 61 vert. I've followed his posts and know how busy he can be but he was still able to email multiple times and keep me posted till he got everything together. He even kept his cool when I had a UPS issue. Parts came today and can't wait to bolt them in. Thanks Tim |

Just want to bring this post up to date a little, I picked my car up from tim yesterday 1-28-10 and it was done better than if I had it done at the factory. The paint was flawless, the body hung strait ,doors shut nice, and the price was what you would expect to pay for the work that was done. I live about 2 hours from tim but its not hard to research his work. I have 1 local vw hacks that live nearby and still went to R.I. Anyone thinking about having a car resto done. give him a call. I promise you won't be disappointed. THANKS_AGAIN TIM Jeff |

Thanks for posting some of my pictures Tim. Started putting it together and learned a good lesson. I bought some of the seals and rubber last year at one of the swap meets and thought I'd save a few dollars on the cheap stuff. WRONG. The stuff is absolute junk. Took a ride to see Dave at Bug City in Berlin ,Ct. and bought German. A little costly but well worth the quality. Don't try to save on the small stuff. It's not worth it. Jeff |

Just another update on some dealings with Tim.I wasn't happy with a small thing under the driver door that only bothered me. Called Tim and was told to bring the door to his shop and fixed the next day. Made me remember on a handshake that he backs up all his work that iisn't neglect. How do you beat that? Jeff |

no one wants to have issues with their freshly restored body,i missed an area under the drivers door and need to be taken care of period.
...unhappy customers make for an unhappy hobby/project.
...glad it was an easy fix too!!! _________________ WWW.401RESTOS.COM
