While the top was off we were trying to decide what to do with the ceiling due to the flocking coming off in spots. Re-flock, Insulate laminate fabric, Headliner material, or just paint. We decided to re-flock the ceiling. So, how to remove the old flocking. First I tried sanding, no way. Then I tried a razor, nothing, Then a wire wheel worked with some success but left glue. The glue sanded off but too much work. Then acetone....BINGO. Before I start always use proper mask, gloves and eye protection. Also, work in a well ventilated area. First with the top on upside down on sawhorses pour a little acetone starting at the edge then slowly dribble it down until half a section (between humps) is fully wet. Don't do too much at once because it will dry out before you get to it. Allow the acetone to sit for a couple minuets. When soaked start using a paint scrapper (I used a floor scrapper with razor for the large areas but be careful not to gouge the top )and simply remove the flocking and glue. Continue doing small sections until done. For final clean up just use a sander with 120, 220,320. Then apply flocking or do what ever you want.
Total time to remove flocking was 45 minutes give or take 10 minutes.
I have read that acetone could possibly be bad for the gel coat but I am pretty sure most pop tops gel coats (If original) are fully cured and seeing I was sanding, finish wasn't a problem. _________________ 1977 Westfalia |
