As I get to play with these fine toys here at work I often find a muse to indulge my other bad habits. Sam wanted some new 181 emblems so I started to make one for him. Here is my first prototype.
I decided that the first run was lacking somethings so I morphed it into the old school VW emblem style.
The pictures below show the CAD “Creo” file exporting to STL, then the STL being sliced and post processed for exportation to the 3D Printer. The large KDF one takes 3.5 hours to print. The holes in the back are for knurled threaded inserts that I pressed into the back with a soldering iron to melt them in. I then used screws to attach them to the precise holes; no drilling needed.

First attempt.
On the right is the original emblem from Sam. I sprayed talcum powder on it to try and get a 3D laser scan for import into CAD.
Last project is working well.

Not sure about production but I will certainly send the STL files to anyone who asks so they can 3D Print it if they wish. _________________ "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

Hope the 3-D technology continues to evolve quickly. Can't wait for the high quality parts that will ultimately come out of this ! Hope someone figures out how to use metal, not just plastic. _________________ 1963 Beetle

I just requested around 36K in our capital budget next year for a Stratasys 1200ES, we will see if the higher ups let it stay...
Right now I am doing all of our parts on a cheaper entry level machine, it was around $5k. The good thing about it is that it is not limited to just ABS like the Stratasys machine, I am currently working with a new carbon fiber based material. Build volume is also bigger at a full cubic foot.
The major downside of the machine is due to its open-air design, I am not allowed to print anything longer than 8 hours since someone needs to be around for that rare "just in case" scenario. |

I don't have access to 3D printing equipment but would bite your hand off for one the KDF ones if you decide to start making them to sell |

Just make a mold and cast it in resin. I have been making resin parts for my models for years. The resin is strong and can be colored or painted.

Glad you volks like 5t. Next week, when I get back from Death Valley, I will post STL files on my 181 archive page for all to use. _________________ "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

Brilliant work.
I've done a couple of 3D printed parts myself. They had the same heavy texturing that your part has. I wonder if there is a variation of printer that can print without leaving the texture, or at least with a fine enough texture that it would be practical to sand the part smooth.
And once that smooth part exists, I'd investigate having a chrome finish applied with spray metalizing. (!)
If you're interested in another project, I'd be happy to provide a vector version of this:

That texture is just the nature of the beast. The way the material is layed out causes that pattern. If it was an SLA style resin machine it would be much smoother. Those machines cure with UR light however, which means the parts also break down in the sunlight. |

Here are links to the STL files.
Normal 181 emblem. Note the posts are too fragile to use.
https://goo.gl/9IVLaZ
181-KDF
https://goo.gl/U0gVNq
The holes are made for a special insert that I found at a local industrial supply house. If I can find the part number and company name I will post that also.
If Volks want the CAD files I will have to redo them a little. Currently I only have them made in Creo Parametric 3.0
I paint all my parts after thorough cleaning and drying so the sun will not break down the ABS material.
There are smoothing processes for the 3D printed ABS parts but it is not safe and highly toxic. _________________ "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

Please do send that to me and I will make a CAD model of it and STL over the holidays. It might be cool.
Maybe a 481 is also in order...
Could you make one like that also Captain? _________________ "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
