This message Could be of interest for Vanagon owners as it relates to the hex bolts on the Paulchen rack whether it is for Vanagon or Eurovan.
Allo all
I wonder if the rear hatch is the same size on early eurovans (1993-1995) and late eurovans (1999-2003) ? I wonder because I tried to install my Paulchen rack on my EV 2002 today and the hex bolts that go through the holes at the bottom of the rack are not long enough??? Missing at least 1 cm. This is a brand new Paulchen rack ( a rarity I know) with the proper bolts so I don't think that the bolts are the problem. My hatch measure exactly 59 inches from top to bottom.
Anyway, here in Vancouver BC, it seems impossible to find this type of bolts ( 6 mm in diameter x 6 or 7 cms or 8 cms long) with a square ending that locks into the rack holes and keep the bolt secured. Do these bolts have a name ??)? The bolt itself is plain ( no ending for screwdrivers) and has thread on half the length only. If you have any idea how these bolts are called and/ or where to get them, please let me know as it would facilitate my search ( can't see it on Internet???) .
Thanks in advance

I think you are describing what we call carriage bolts. The selection of metric carriage bolts in the US is limited, because typically these are used in wood structures and inch prevails in the USA construction industry.
Get exact measurements and I might be able to help. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

Actually John, after more research, I saw pictures of earlier versus later eurovans and it appears that the Paulchen rack is different. The core looks the same but it might need different hardware to fit the later Eurovan. i'll keep investigating. If interested Google Paulchen bike rack and choose "image". |

You might be right as I got my Paulchen from someone who moved onto a Eurovan. If you go to https://paulchensystem.net/en/bike-carrier/volkswagen
and look at the T3 vs T4 racks and they indeed look different. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

Allo John
I must apologize here as I was finally able to fit my Paulchen rack which came from an earlier Eurovan onto my 2202 Weekender. The culprit other than my limited abilities ) was an after market piece installed by the previous owner to hold the license plate. This was getting in the way. So all done and installed. Brand new T4 Paulchen rack c/w lock.... Sorry for false alarm... |
