Is there a way to easily find the gear ratio externally on the diff and transmission ?
Also did the diesels get a different ratio than the NA 2.1

Look for the 3 letter transmission code and that will tell you what the gear ratio it came with. If it is a north american unit it is likely 4.86, unless it has been imported or regeared of course.

Syncro vans absolutely MUST have matching R&Ps front and rear.

Is the diesel transaxle housing the same as the gas, can the diesel transaxle be used with the gas engine, will it bolt up. Main shaft splines?
I'm looking to possibly change the gear ratio maybe something like a 5.83 or 5.43

The bell housing, input shaft, and slave cylinder bracket are different on the diesel bell housing, but you can put on a gas bellhousing pretty easy. If it's a locker trans, one of the output flanges has to come off to change the input shaft.
