Nice work on doing a breakdown.
I think a "complete" engine would be less overall than having to buy everything separately.
Same thing with buying a car, a complete car broken out into parts would be wayyyy more money.
Most of those prices seem right to me though with this exception:
>Early muffler $350 - $450 plus shipping
>
That is really high, you can find an early muffler in the low $200s with some patience. The only time I thought about paying that much (but still less than $300) was when someone had a REAL early muffler with the VW stamp on it.
Also
>Heater Boxes $100 pair plus shipping
>
For early ones? That would be a good deal in my opinion. _________________ How to Post Photos

This also assumes that the buyer doesn't already have any parts of/for this engine. |

I had a complete, fresh (NOS carbs even) 1967 stock motor, correct except for the exhaust, on this site for months.
Air filter, clutch, generator, all German stuff, too.
It was on the run stand, and started right away, quiet like a Swiss watch.
Nobody wanted to give me $800 for it.
Anybody who has ever sold stuff knows type 3 people are _cheap_.
So,
Just to throw it out there;
What it might cost to build vs. what you can sell it for are two far different numbers.
Best to just hold on and hoard... _________________ Bus Motor Build

They might break even if they parted the engine out and shipped parts. It's going to be hard to sell without shipping as an option. |

Agreed. I bought an NOS early muffler (without the VW stamp) for 100 bucks for my 64 T-34. At the time I bought it, I wasn't really looking for it (I had just picked up the car 2 months prior). I picked it up at the 2010 Type 3 Invasion from the guys in Chicago (type 3 drag racers) that had brought some goodies to Missouri. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

And that's just for parts. At your cost. That's not cleaning, detailing, painting... not only the tin but the fasteners.
I'm going to break your heart but a lot of those fasteners ought to be yellow cad plated as original.
See, this is what a lot of Type 3 people do not understand. Anybody can- and will- build you an incorrect engine, but if you want to stand above the crowd and have it CORRECT... that's not the time to squeeze pennies... that's the time to mutter "OUCH", grin and bear it, then laugh all the way to the bank after you sell it in 5- 10 years for big bucks to a serious buyer that's already passed on twenty rat- fucked hoopties. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Compadre I agree with you
Yes many of hours involved
my time searching for parts and ask for shipping quote
Next day agree for it and cleaning etc.
And prices of parts will get worst
But I do and buy what's available
The few correction like fasteners
