The heat worked good, but I was pretty damp. The heat in the bus works well, and you can turn the heat from defrost to foot heat by turning the lever on the heat tube.
If it was at defog, grit came out of the heat tube in spite of the vacuuming done before. Not much, but some:
So RIGHT before we left I noticed we did not have wipers. We had got the bus on the Road in July, and it was a very dry July. The higher up the mountain we went, the more it was raining.
Pic taken out the window:
Through the window:

After heading over White Pass, and down the other side, the rain got less and even let up around Rimrock.
There were a bunch of rafters floating down the river
Stopped for a Photo Op and was almost dry at this point. The sun was nice.
Milage check:

Got home and we had put ~770 miles on the bus in total since July.
It was a blast. I want to do more camping!!!!!
This is what the fuel filter looked like:
Obviously we did not clean every speck of rust out of the tank. I will rock a magnet down the filler neck.

the absolute rarest thing in this picture, which is VERY hard to see, is that greg is driving his bus with an OIL LEAK
I cant believe it myself!! |
True that! He wouldn't let me take a picture of it, but it was highly stressful. There was an ugly puddle of oil on the left side of the motor, below the oil pressure switch.
It was not the oil pressure switch leaking.
it was not the fuel pump base.
It was not the seal around the distributor.
It was not the oil cooler.
Greg pulled the motor, checked the seals, cleaned everything up, replaced the motor. Still leaking.
Was leaking out from under the fan shroud near the base of the oil cooler.
Pulled the motor, pressure tested the oil cooler. It was fine.
Replaced the oil cooler and ran the motor with the fan shroud off.
It was weeping from a hairline crack that is really hard to see. And really hard to take a pic of. It is where the black wire is pointing to.
It was not a quart in 100 miles, or in 770 miles, but enough to make a mess. Time to replace the engine case.
Just to the right of the bottom of the U crack you can see it starting to weep.

The old engine in my dads Beetle had a crack in the same spot.
At least you know a guy who can fix it _________________ EMPI Power Rules! |

At the risk of sounding sacrilegious (yeah, I had to Google to check the spelling), could you not just rough up the area and seal the crack with a chemical metal (epoxy) putty?
It's not like it'll be seen.
Of course, if you've got an engine lying around...
And doesn't this burn your toes?...
I ran my truck with the heat on last week and the tube was hot down there. _________________ Andy

My feet were pretty cold at that point from being wet for about three hours. I put my toes in the hole of the heater tube to try to warm them up quickly. Eventually the feet dried off, and most of me as well, and the floor of the bus.... _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Regarding the diagnosis of oil leaks, I have had good luck using some Gold Bond foot powder spray. Just clean the area in question very well and then lightly spray it. Run it and check for the wet spot. |

That case can likely be repaired. I had one with a crack like that repaired at Rimco. Brothers Machine may be able to fix it as well.
Great Bus, BTW. _________________ I've never met a Bus I didn't like.

The old case is out back sitting on the scrap pile. Maybe I'll fish it out and practice welding on it at some point.
I had the motor in and out a number of times trying to find the leak.
The oil cooler was dry, but I wanted to pressure test the adapter bracket just to rule it out. It looked dry. I had to machine the seal pockets and enlarge the mounting holes on the tool to check the doghouse cooler.
The gauge needs to be replaced but I was able to put it in a bucket of soapy water and I looked for bubbles. It checked out fine.
We then ran the motor for a few minutes with the fan shroud off and quickly saw the shiny spot where it was leaking. Damn!
I can't imagine welding up a crack with the motor all together so if the engine needed to come apart I figured I'd better start cleaning up another case.
This is a case which I had cleaned up a bit a while back but wasn't super impressed with it and set it aside. I'm not sure what type of case it is. Someone sanded off all the markings on the bottom of the case. It has the threaded holes for the baywindow hanger. It has 10mm oil passages but has a 6mm mounting stud hole for the oil cooler. That seems weird. It's dual relief. It has an H number stamped below the generator pedestal but I know that isn't right. I would think maybe this was a B case except for the 6mm stud.
The first thing I did was look it over for cracks by heating up areas that are sometimes found cracked with a small torch. I did this with the last motor but missed it.
I then cut the thrust on the case.
And grabbed the boring bar for .040 over and cut the bore.
Luckily this is same size as the previous case, and I was planning to swap everything into the new case including bearings.
Once that was done I put the case in a tub of solvent and left it there to soak.
It's amazing how fast they come apart.
This is the crack, you can barely make it out. Its not the casting flashing which runs from the top left corner of the photo towards the bottom right. The crack in the case follows the direction of travel of the torch, from the bottom left towards the top right. You may need to zoom in on the photo to see it. It's nearly invisible - no surprise I missed it.

And here she is ready to go back in.
Nothing fancy, at some point I'd like to build something a bit more exotic for this bus. |
