I bought a Bosch autostick starter a couple years ago. It was like the new one pictured. It was about $150.00 at Napa.

It's been worth it.

Looks like someone has that starter right now on amazon brand new for $104, with free shipping:

Only takes them 3-5 weeks to ship it. Confused

Thanks, would you believe I've got about 4 original autostik starters on the shelf. That's like a lifetime supply for me. Very Happy

If they are OG you'll be set.

I'm pretty sure my old starter had a dead spot or two, and whenever Auto-zone rebuilds them they do the bare minimum to make it run.

Yes, but that's a Reman unit.

Still probably good though.

True.

2 years // 24 months warranty - seems good enough for me Wink

LOL I remember you were really surprised when you heard your new engine crank up in my bug Very Happy
It still starts up like that, even after sitting for a couple weeks. I really like that starter.

Sorry everyone, I've been away for a while dealing with a few personal issues.

I was in a bit of a fender bender & Curb and had to step away to repair my car back in early February.

2 Bent rims.
Control arm bent.
Sub frame & radiator mount was smashed in.
Front impact bumper beam was pushed into the A/C condenser.
Both seat belts blew the explosive charge in them.

But its all back together, everyone is safe!

Back to regular Beetle work and more updates.

Sorry for all the delays!

That looks like a bit more than a fender bender! Shocked Glad everyone is OK

Great job on the repair! Looks excellent! Are you a full fledged body guy now?

Been busy, sorry about the lack of updates.

Pulled the OG motor from the beetle, the new motor is almost ready to install.

This motor has not been apart since it left the factory in 1971.

Even has the dowel pins for the intake manifold end castings.

And what is left of the valve stem seals. You can see the black ring floating on the valve stem.

This engine has had non-detergent oil throughout its life, thus the carbon build up on metal parts.

Pulled the OEM IRS transaxle out of the bug this past weekend.

It's been around 109 F with the heat index, so working outside is cut to around 1-2 hours.

CV grease still looks good after 46 years/ 70k miles.

However I will re-pack the joints just because.

Will be replacing the bowden tube, seal, and all transaxle mounts from Wolfsburg West.

Rebuilt transaxle from KCR, stock gears. Uses a later 1973+ Case which is a "tad" stronger.
