Subaru Engine question

I have a 1996 2.2L suby in my vanagon and it looks like it's time for a replacement, so I'm looking at a 2.2L JDM motor. My question is does the JDM motor have to be the same year as the one I have in my bus? Or if I got a 1998 motor would my ECU be compatible?

Use only the long block with all of your parts and you should be fine.

If its a true JDM motor, it will be 2 liter, NOT 2.2L
