Was wondering if anyone painted their ragtop vinyl? I've used SEM vinyl paint in the past with good results. Vinyl is in great shape, it just has some pretty stubborn stains on it. Might try straight bleach on a spot.
Also started to hit the rear vents with the sand blaster. Will be a slow process..but starting to get there.

Back on this car again as I get closer to paint.
Welded in the heat tubes, sealed them up.
More work smoothing the hood out
Stripped inside decklid of paint, rust, dirt and grease
Had to make a relief cut in this qtr patch b/c it wasn't allowing the door to close enough. All good now
Smoothed out engine tray patch

Decided to completely strip hood. Only like a third of the way done.
Going around the car touching up pinholes with spot filler
Finally finished stripping the paint in the rear vents. Used paint stripper with drill and scotch brite and sandblasting
Put a temporary paint booth up

Finished stripping the hood to bare metal
Finished up the fans for the paint booth.
Got the 2k filler primer laid down
Next up after all the block sanding will be ready for the basecoat.

What's the airflow like in your little booth with those 2 fans? When I painted my truck in my garage and no fans, and only the door open, my eyes were burning and watering so bad it was hard to finish by the 4th coat.
I've been looking around for a paint booth to rent in my area, but it's becoming difficult these days. Putting a Bug on a trailer and bringing all those loose pieces seems like a nightmare waiting for a scratch. I've been painting all 19 pieces for a buddy's motorcycle and it's been a real challenge to keep dirt out. _________________ Check out my truck brought back from the dead... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=420762&highlight=sprayed+blood

Hey Tincan, the booth can get tight at times, and you have to move stuff around, but I made the most of it. The fans do ok, but occasionally I need to blow off the filters or change them out to cut down the dust. I wet down tarp on the floor.
Finally laid some color, looks green in the booth but its Gulf Blue.
Then hit everything with clear
Cleared the steering column piece I painted a while ago

I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and do the same kind of setup. Looks great! |
Thanks, today I started to wet sand parts and use Wizard's turbo cut to buff out some runs and little nibs here and there in the paint. My decklid has some clearcoat overspray that I'm going to wetsand and buff out too.

Wetsanded and buffed the decklid and a fender. Still need to machine polish.
Accidentally leaned it on a sawhorse and scratched, will have to touch up and fix
