New to VW’s. Bought a 1967 and the motor only has the number 40 stamped on it. Aftermarket re-build?

I have been in VWs for a long time and I have never seen a case ground down that much before. It will be impossible for you to get a correct answer on this one, unless you were there. If the motor runs, fine. If not, all you can do is repair. My uneducated guess is the crank is turned .040, it is not a serial number

Or maybe it is a 40 hp.....lets see a picture of the entire motor..especially the carb....is it a 28 or 28pict-1 Solex

What you have there is a rebuilt motor. The 4 and the 0 where stamped deeper than the rest of the numbers, that’s why after milling they remain.
